Scott Maynes was born on the 6th of February, 1964 in Albany, New York. He was born the son of James A. Maynes and Jeannette Miller Maynes. He was the third of five children in the Maynes' family. Scott was diagnosed with Cystic Fybrosis (CF), and it was not known at the time whether or not he would live to the age of ten due to the lack of knowledge of this disease in the medical world. Even with CF, which led to numerous trips to the doctor and several stays in the hospital, Scott lived an active childhood. This left hander enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, hockey on the lake and everything else a boy would do. Through high school his health did not allow him to play on the teams, but he kept involved however he could. Scott also excelled in school, always making honor roll every year. Scott graduated with honors from the St. Mary’s high school in Glens Falls, NY.
After graduating from high school Scott started the next journey of his life. He worked at a few different jobs while attending college at the Brevard Community College in Florida. Scott finally settled down at a job at the Brevard Correctional Facility for youthful offenders, where he worked hard and made it to the rank of Sergeant. He also remained involved in sports, becoming an official. Scott officiated an uncountable number of games in football, basketball and soccer. He always remained busy, if he wasn't working or officiating he would be doing odd jobs for people, tiling floors and bathrooms, putting in sprinkler systems or anything someone needed done. No task seemed too hard; he would happily take on any challenge.
One day Scott signed up for a 5K run sponsored by Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Florida. After completing the run he was hooked and he knew he had found his new challenge. Scott participated in many 5 and 10K runs continuing to progress in the sport and then added bike racing, which led to several mini triathlons. Scott still wanted to do more, so he organized a 5K run sponsored by the Brevard Correctional Institution with the proceeds supporting the Cystic Fybrosis Foundation. Scott hosted this run for several years. Scott still continued to challenge himself, working hard on his running. He participated in and completed six different Marathons: Two Disney, two New York, one LA Marathon and one in Washington DC.
It wasn't until one day in the latter part of the 90's that Scott’s life was turned upside down in a great way. He was introduced to a lady named Patty by a mutual friend. After a few dates and spending time with her daughters, Nicole and Kimberly, they decided to spend their lives together. On May 16, 1998 they got married. It was a fun and exciting time for everyone. Scott coached soccer and then began to referee. His new family kept him busy and active in many different ways. Many crazy, fun filled family vacations came Scott’s way with Patty’s family. Cruises, Disney, Virginia were all part of Scott’s happy new life. Patty’s family loved Scott like a son, and brother. His nieces and nephews also were very involved with Uncle Scott . Holidays were never the same again for Scott when he was surrounded by Patty and her family. Scott raised his new daughters with discipline and love, as if he was truly their father. Scott had 14 great years of fun and love with his new family.
When Scott’s health began to fail, he started a new kind of fight. He faced his first transplant with courage and strength. For two years he was without oxygen and although he had some ups and downs he felt pretty good. He was able to go for long walks with his dogs and Patty and more great cruises. He continued to work and lead a pretty normal life. When his new lungs began to reject, he again faced the courage he needed to do it again. The second transplant did not go quite as well. Scott was almost called home to God once. Scott and Patty were given five additional months of being together, even though it was at the hospital. They had lots of laughs and fun together. Scott found a new family with all the staff at Jackson Memorial Hospital. They also came to love him. In the end, though, God decided he needed Scott up in heaven to be with him and become our Angel to watch over all who knew him.
