My deepest sympathy goes out to the Dan family.  I just read Dr. Dan's obituary in the NY Times, and I must say, I was not only fascinated by what he accomplished, but emotionally moved, as well.  He was truly a remarkable man, and I hope it is some comfort to his loved ones, that the lives of many, many people were saved due to his arduous research and efforts to bring a terrible disease to the forefront, and inform medical professiionals and eceryday people about health and medicine.  God bless Dr. Dan.

I worked with Bruce at JAMA from 1985 to 1988.  He was such fun to be around-- so smart, so quick, so funny, so energetic, so full of enthusiasms.  As a non-MD editor, I particularly appreciated his gift for explaining medical problems and research clearly in our interminable manuscript meetings.  I haven't seen him in years but knew of his marriage, and once saw a photo of him with his family that delighted me.  I am so sorry that he has lost twenty years of what would have been such a fruitful and appreciated life.

So very sorry to hear of Bruce's passing. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Lisa and Ethan,  We are deeply sorry in learning of the passing of Dr. Dan.  Ronnie remembers Bruce as a devoted and caring dad to Ethan during his years of Kidball.  He would always help any child no matter how minor the scrape or "boo-boo" might have been.  Kelli especially remembers a time when Dr. Dan was coaching third base and sent every runner home no matter how close the play at home may have been.  He will be missed.

Lisa -- The service for Bruce today was magnificent, celebrating so many aspects of his wonderful and engaged life while also reminding us, painfully, how you and we have lost. I know I said it before, but the thought has stayed with me: the world is today a little less kind, intelligent, enthusiastic, humble, generous and playful than it was on Tuesday.
