David Lyle Smith, a beloved and cherished member of the Rogers community, passed away on December 20, 2025, at the age of 69. Born on October 23, 1956, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, David was the devoted son of Robert and Marcella Smith. At the age of two, his family relocated to Rogers, Arkansas for his father’s job at Daisy Air Rifle. Growing up in Rogers, David attended Rogers High School, where he excelled as an exceptional football player for the Rogers Mounties and was recognized as an Arkansas All-State Player.
David pursued higher education at the University of Arkansas, earning a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Education. He was a proud member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, forming lifelong bonds with his fraternity brothers. His passion for sports and education led him to coach football at his alma mater under the legendary Mounties coach, Blackie Bond. His career in education spanned over thirty years within the Rogers Public School District, where he was a compassionate and inspirational teacher and coach. David's dedication to coaching football and track brought multiple state championships to both Rogers High School and Rogers Heritage High School. His contributions to the community were honored with his induction into the Mountie Hall of Fame. Even after retirement, David continued his service to the Rogers Public School District as the treasurer of the Rogers Retired Teachers Association.
In September 1985, David met his loving and devoted wife, Brenda, on a blind date, and they were engaged by December of the same year. The couple married on March 22, 1986, and were blessed to share four decades of love together. David was a selfless and patient father to his sons, Jacob and Jordan, challenging them to grow into admirable men and serving as their ultimate role model. As a grandfather, David adored being a Papa and was a true hero to his grandchildren, providing love and closeness they will carry with them forever. His legacy as a father and grandfather is deeply cherished by his family.
David was a man of quiet but strong faith, reflecting Christ in his actions and serving many churches, particularly as a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. His personal interests included traveling to places with mountains or beaches, cheering on his favorite sports teams, and tinkering with various projects. Known for his financial acumen, he was the go-to person for help and advice, always generous and thoughtful.
Survived by his loving wife, Brenda; sons, Jacob and Jordan; daughter-in-law, Natalie; grandchildren, Sawyer and Lydia; mother-in-law, Mary Taggart; and a host of beloved family and friends, David's presence will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marcella Smith; sister, Pamela Smith; and father-in-law, Robert J. Taggart.
David's compassionate and humorous nature, combined with his loyal and faithful spirit, left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He was a devoted and caring son, a stalwart friend, and an extraordinary family man. David's genuine, loving heart and servant leadership made everyone around him feel comfortable, and his memory will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in David’s honor to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Rogers, Eagle Family Ministries in Bentonville, or the Rogers Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund.
