Noel ‘Sonny’ Carlos Pedro, 96 of Bermuda, who was visiting family in Garfield, Arkansas, passed away on November 29, 2023. He was born on December 14, 1926, in Paget, Bermuda to the late Abel Pedro and Mary Pires.
Raised in Paget, Sonny was quite the jack-of-all-trades. He was a jockey for many of his early years, racing in the Bermuda Cup and some Sulky Championships. He also rode for owners in Canada. After his career as a jockey, he worked on cruise ships and drove a taxi. He also had a water delivery service and a trucking business. For many years he worked with his dad and brother in construction and quarries, building many homes in Bermuda.
Sonny had a stroke about five years ago and was unable to do so many things he enjoyed. But he continued to love telling stories and kept his sense of humor even to the end. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He and his beloved wife, Joan Gibbons, were married for over fifty years.
He is preceded in death by: wife, Joan Pedro; parents; sisters, Evelyn Ogle and Lydina Fredrick; and brother, Wilton Pedro.
Sonny is survived by his sister, Noreen Shaw; step-daughter, Joann Chipps (Ron); three grandchildren, Alex (Rebecca), Chris (Grace), and Heidi; six great-grandchildren; and 9 nieces and nephews.
