Tom was born in Syracuse, NY on September 11, 1921 to Thomas Golden and Marguerite Schwarzenbach. He grew up in the small town of Pottsville, PA where he excelled at football and wrestling in high school. After graduating from Lehigh University, Tom joined the Army in 1943 where he served as a Lieutenant during WWII in the Pacific Theater in Guam, Okinawa and the Philippines. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, the Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart for his service.
After the war, Tom went to work for the Phillips-Van Heusen corporation and travelled around the country helping to establish new factories, including one in Brinkley, AR that he often spoke fondly of. Back in Pottsville, he met his wife and they relocated to Arizona during which time he studied for his PhD in Educational Psychology and Guidance Counseling and began raising a family of 5 children. Tom and his family eventually settled in Northwest Arkansas where it has become home for three subsequent generations.
He is survived by his loving children: Peter of Tempe, AZ, Neil of Tulsa, OK, Megan Herrington (Perry Lee) of Little Flock, AR, Sara Bailey (David) of Rogers, AR, Becky Tucker (Roger) of Gentry, AR, and stepson Nat Stevens of Chula Vista, CA, 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
A short service, to include the presentation of a Military Funeral Flag, will be held at the Fayetteville National Cemetery on January 12, 2023 at 12:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the non-profit organization Remember WWII that is dedicated to cataloguing stories and memories of WWII vets (https://www.gofundme.com/f/Rememberww2).
