
Mrs. Brackett was born Jan. 21, 1935 in Rome, daughter of the late Woodrow Holder and Eleanor Holland Holder Montgomery. She was also preceded in death by her husband David P. Brackett in 1982 and her Aunt, Ann Payne.
Carolyn grew up in Rome and graduated in 1952 from Rome High School. At Rome High she was the editor of the Roman Yearbook and a member of the marching band. Carolyn attended college at the Atlanta Business College which later became Georgia State Unviersity. After completing a two year business program, she worked at the school for several years as secretary to the Dean. In 1956, she married David P. Brackett and they moved to Auburn, AL, where David attended pharmacy school. The Bracketts opened Bracket's Pharmacy on Maple Street in 1963 and served the Rome and Lindale communities for twenty years. The business was sold to Eckerd's Pharmacy after David's death in 1982.
Carolyn was a proud Democrat and worked tireless hours compaigning for numerous candidates. She helped with Jimmy Carter's campaigns starting with his first run for Governor. She was a member of Jimmy Carter's Peanut Brigarde and travelled to the NE going door to door asking people to vote for Mr.Carter. She attended President Carter's Inauguration along with her husband David who served as a delegate. Carolyn was past president of the Rome/Floyd County Democratic Party and was Democrat of the Year in 1977. Carolyn was an active real estate broker and appraiser for many years. She was affiliated with Davis Realty, Smith Realty and Reese and Smallwood Realty. She also owned and operated Maple Tree Flowers and Gifts.
In the past few years, Carolyn resided at Riverwood Assisted Living on West 10th, where she loved the residents and caregivers. She was a wonderful wife, loving mother, and best friend to many treasured friends.
Carolyn is survived by three children; Jane Brackett and her partner Laurie Richardson of Portland, Or, Laura Weber and Richard Brackett, both of Rome. Also surviving are grandchildren Erica Weber of Athens, Melanie Rounds and her husband Scott of Rome, Vanessa Ray Martin of Rome, and Ben Richardson and Grace Richardson of Portland, OR, and two great-grandchildren Hallie and Aiden Rounds. Carolyn is also survived by many long term dear friends including Barbara and Ray Curtis, Mary Marshall, Betty Fortson, Bunny O'Neil, Joyce Hollingsworth and Larry Martin, and a number of wonderful cousins from the Holland and Holder families.
A memorial service for Mrs. Brackett will be conducted Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at 12:00 PM in the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel's Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Stockton officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday morning at the funeral home from 10:00 AM until the funeral hour.
