

Emily Anne Salmon Culpepper, age 92 formerly of Rome, died September 18, 2025, at Ave Maria Home in Bartlett, Tennessee. Mrs. Culpepper was born July 20, 1933 in Rome to the late Grace Daniel Salmon and Seaborn Wright Salmon. She was also proceeded in death by her husband of 49 years Joel Culpepper on December 31, 2003 and a daughter Coley Culpepper Hendrix on September 17, 2015.
She is survived by a daughter, Anna Culpepper Lucas (John) of Memphis, TN, 4 grandchildren, Robert Joseph Lucas (Sarah Beth), Paul Culpepper Lucas (Shanley), both of Memphis, TN, John Winfield Hendrix (Kristen) of Liberty, KY, Alexander Swofford Hendrix (Brittany) of Lexington, KY and 9 great grandchildren.
She received her education from Rome High School and Meredith College, Raleigh, NC. Mrs. Culpepper was a communicant of Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Kneeler Guild and Saint Elizabeth’s Guild.
She served as a volunteer at East Rome High School for 20 years until the school closed in 1992. She then began volunteering for the City of Rome. Her first event was the Olympic Flag Transfer. She was also a volunteer for RACE to 1996, Mayfest on the Rivers, Heritage Holidays, and Coosa River Christmas.
In 1993 she became a Government-In-Service Volunteer for the City of Rome, assigned to the Greater Rome Convention and Visitors Bureau. She was a docent at Rome’s Historic Clocktower and Myrtle Hill Cemetery. She also conducted tours of the Between the Rivers Historic District and the history and architecture of Broad Street. She was one of the founders of Where Romans Rest, walking guided tours of Myrtle Hill Cemetery. She was also active in Divine Rome, a tour of the houses of worship in the Between the Rivers Historic District. Through the years she led several thousand students from Rome and Floyd County Schools on tours of Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
She was an active member of the Myrtle Hill/Oak Hill Memorial Association which established and constructed Veterans Plaza at the Tomb of the Known Soldier.
She served on the Board of Directors for Hands on Rome and the Board of Governors for the Rome Area History Museum.
She was honored on several occasions for her volunteer contributions to the Rome community: Gladiator of the Year Award from the student body of East Rome High School, City of Rome Volunteer of the Year in 1994, Heart of the Community Honor Award in 1997, Co-Grand Marshall of the Heritage Holidays Parade in 2001, Grand Marshall of the Rome Christmas Parade in 2004, Heart of the Community Board of Governors Award in 2013, and the As Time Goes By Garden at Rome’s Historic Clocktower was dedicated in her honor in 2019.
In 2005 she was named one of twelve women in the State of Georgia to be honored by the Georgia Commission on Women as Georgia’s Legacy: Older Women. The award recognizes volunteer service to others well past the age of retirement.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on December 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends following the service in Daniel Hall.
