Ms. Raines was born January 10, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Myrtle Barrett Raines and Gus Franklin Raines, also to a deceased brother Warner Raines.
Ms. Raines moved to Rome in 1929, attended Tubize (Celanese) grammar school, and Rome Girls High, graduating in 1942. She graduated from Shorter College in 1946 with an A.B. with honors. She later earned her master’s and six-year teaching degrees from Peabody College for Teachers (now part of Vanderbilt University) and Georgia State University.
Ms. Raines taught mostly 8th grade math, starting at Rome Boys High in 1942 and retired from East Rome Junior High School in 1978. She also taught Sunday school at Rome First Baptist Church for many years. There is no way to measure the impact she had on education in Rome and the lives of her students.
Ms. Raines loved to travel and made trips to Europe, the Holy Land, Canada, and always to visit family.
She is survived by her brother, Donald C. Raines; nieces, Laura Raines Yaramishyn (husband, Gregory J. Yaramishyn) and Beth Raines; great nieces, Sarah Y. Nolin and Frances J. Yaramishyn, and great-great niece, Sydney Nolin, and great-great nephew, James Nolin. Also cousin Vicki McCorsley (husband, Mike).
The family will receive friends Saturday, February 17, 2024 at the First Baptist Church sanctuary, Rome, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. A service will then be conducted at 10:30 following the visitation. Interment will follow the service at East View Cemetery.
