

Hubert Berton Stepp was born on November 25, 1923, in Bartow County, son of the late Henry and Nora Stepp. He graduated from Cave Spring High School and attended Oglethorpe University on a baseball scholarship. After six months there he was called into the army in 1943. He was in the service for 34 months-26 of which, were spent in the South Pacific as a cryptographer. He graduated from Auburn University in 1948 with a B.S. in Accounting. He played baseball with the Auburn varsity for three years. Mr. Stepp worked 40 years with GA Highway Express/Transus Motor Freight as a terminal manager covering the Northwest Ga. area. He played semi-pro baseball with the Lindale team in the Northwest Ga. Textile League in 1942, 1946, and 1947. He played in the Ogeechee League in 1948 and with the Rome Red Sox in 1949. He was in the Rome Lions’ Club for more than 20 years, and served as President in 1969.
He was an active member in the Second Avenue United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and was Secretary of the Administrative Board for 12 years and Chairman for four years. He was also Chairman of the Pastor, Parrish Relations Committee and of the Board of Trustees. His hobbies included raising, training and competing with beagles in Beagle Field trials. He was elected to the National Beagle Breeders Hall of Fame, and to the National Beagler’s Hall of Fame. He was secretary of the Southern Federation of Beagle Clubs for 30 years and served two years as its President and was President of the Lookout Beagle Club for several years. He served on the Rome Recreation Committee in the mid-fifties. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Geverna, who preceded him in death on Nov. 4, 2008; a brother Clyde Stepp; two sisters, Claudie Knowles and Mary Little; half-brothers, Steward Stepp and Frank Stepp; half-sisters, Belle Bell, Mildred Walker, Ruth Threat and Marie Layto.
Mr. Stepp is survived by his daughter Leta Steep Reeves (David) of Marietta and step-grandchildren, Natasha Reeves, Luke Reeves and Mark Reeves of Lawrenceville.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Second Avenue United Methodist Church with the Rev. Beth Sanders officiating. Interment was held at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends following the interment at the church starting around 12:15 PM.
