
Mrs. McCord, born in Rome January 20, 1915, was the daughter of the late George William and Jane Adams Dean Miller. She was married Apr 30,1938 to Dr. Ralph Butler McCord, who died in 1970. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Agnes Nash, in 1983, and by a son, Ralph McCord, Jr., in 1993.
Mrs. McCord was a 1932 graduate of Rome High School and received her degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia in 1936 and a master of fine arts, painting from the same university in 1971. She also studied design and painting at Berry College, Shorter College, and the University of Tennessee.
Jane McCord was an artist and teacher and became Chairman of the Art department at Shorter College from 1971 until 1980. Her paintings have been exhibited and won awards in numerous art shows and competitions throughout the country, including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and the Chattanooga Hunter Exhibit, where she won the Purchase Award in 1972. In 1976, two of her paintings won international recognition when they were selected for the “American Painters in Paris” exhibit, held in Paris.
Mrs. McCord served on the board of the Garden Club of Georgia, as president of the Seven Hills Garden Club, and was an accredited flower show judge. As a charter member of the Georgia Association of Landscape Design Appraisers (GALDA), she was instrumental in the design of the Meriwether Garden of the Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute. She was active in the Rome Tree Committee, and chairman of the Board of the Carnegie Library where she helped to design and maintain the planting of the first library garden. In 1969 she received the Outstanding Sustainer award given by the Rome Junior Service League for her many contributions to the city.
Her talents enriched many areas in Rome, including Darlington School, Myrtle Hill Park, and the Second Avenue Bridge. In 1994, she received the Heart of the Community award.
Jane McCord was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1938. She was frequently involved in efforts to beautify the church and was a member of the Adult fellowship Sunday School class. She served on the grounds committee and loved arranging flowers for the sanctuary.
Survivors include two daughters, Deana McCord Wallace of Rome, and Jane McCord of Augusta; a son, Dr. John Miller McCord of Rome, a sister, Esther Miller Kimbrell of Rome; four grandchildren: Natalie Wallace Burnand (George) of Winchester, England; Mary McCord Dennis (Shannon) of Rossville; Dr. Laura McCord of Columbia, Missouri; and John McCord, Jr. of Durham,NC; five great-grandchildren: Peter, Walter, and Patrick Burnand of Winchester, England; and Rylee and Sam Dennis of Rossville. There are also many nieces, a nephew, and other relatives who loved and will miss Jane McCord.
A memorial service will be held Mon., Aug12, at 11am at Rome First Methodist Sanctuary, the Rev. Larry Caywood officiating. The family will receive friends at 9:30-11am in the Wilder Center.
