
John Freeman (Jack) Cumming, Jr., 70, of 12 Durey Court, Cartersville, passed away Thursday evening, January 20, 2011, at Cartersville Medical Center.
Mr. Cumming was born in Rome on May 3, 1940, the son of the late John Freeman Cumming, Sr., and Corrie Virginia Little Cumming. He was a graduate of Darlington School and attended Auburn University.
Mr. Cumming retired as chairman of the board of Battey Machinery Company. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rome and a past member of the Exchange Club. He was a member of the Auburn Alumni Association and served in the U. S. Marine Corps.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne Magruder Cumming, to whom he was married March 16, 1963; one son, John Freeman (Trey) Cumming, III, and his wife, Katie, Rome; one daughter, Bates Cumming Laye, and her husband, Scott, Cartersville; four grandchildren, John Freeman Cumming, IV, and Mary Kate Cumming, Rome, and Carson Laye and Wyndham Laye, both of Cartersville; two sisters, Mary Johnson and Georgia Hardwick, both of Rome; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 23, 2011, at 4 p.m. at the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home with the Rev. John Uldrich and the Rev. Keith Reaves officiating.
The family will receive friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Sunday following the memorial service until 6:30 p.m.
