
John was born in Marshallville, GA, April 20, 1933. He was the son of the late Edgar Boyd Howell and Sarah Louise Matthews Howell also of Rome; and was preceded by a brother, Edgar Boyd Howell, Jr. of Dalton. John was a 1950 graduate of Rome High School and after serving 2 years in Korea as a Chaplain's assistant in the Army he returned home to receive a bachelor of arts degree from Shorter College in 1958. After teaching for a period of time at Darlington, John went to work for the Piedmont Life Insurance Company which later became Georgia International where he retired and returned to Rome to take care of his mother "Lulu" were well respected and loved among their friends and neighbors. John was an accomplished pianist at many events in the Rome areas as well as serving as a church organist for a number of years. John was a man of abiding faith with a deep love for family and friends and will be dearly missed.
He is survived by a nephew, Walter Brand Howell and wife, Rhonda of Alabama; grand-nephews, Walter Boyd Howell and William Joel Howell of Dalton; and a grand-niece, Sara Louise Howell York of Dalton. The family in deep appreciation would also like to include long time family friends, Dr. Ben and Colleen Pridemore of Rome, who mean more to us than you know.
A graveside memorial service was held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 2 PM in the Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens in Rome. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made to: Cancer Navigators, Inc., 316 West 5th Street, Rome, GA 30165 or to the cancer organization of your choice. Daniel's Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements for John Wesley Howell.
