John “Johnny” William Newman passed into the presence of Jesus on July 31, 2021. Johnny was born May 24th, 1950 to Roselyn Mann Newman and Leon G. Newman in Rome, Ga. He attended East Rome High School, served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and earned a History and Political Science degree from Berry College. He managed several manufacturing plants around Northwest Georgia and spent the majority of his career in regional sales for Magid Glove and Safety until his retirement in 2016. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Paula Pruitt Newman, son Bobby (Allison) Newman of Macon, GA; daughters Amy (Mike) Jones of Rome, GA; and Becky (Kirt) Finnell of Rome, GA. He will be remembered forever as beloved “Pop” by his grandchildren: Sam, Bradley and Charlotte Newman; Evie Kate and Benjamin Jones; and Hollis Holcomb. His surviving brothers are Tommy, Pat and Joe Newman.
Johnny had a passion for all sports, but particularly loved Golf and Braves baseball. An avid golfer, he was a member of Stone Bridge Golf Course. He volunteered as a coach on numerous baseball and softball teams. He was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of Rome. Throughout his 2-year battle with pancreatic cancer, he looked to the Lord for his strength and loved the encouragement that his church family provided him. He always loved being near family and friends.
A private burial will be held for the family at Floyd Memory Gardens on Friday, August 6th. Visitation with be at Daniel’s Funeral Home from 5:00 – 7:30 and a celebration of his life will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Rome from 10:30 – 11:30 on Saturday August 7th. In lieu of flowers, please give donations to Covenant Care Adoption Services or First Presbyterian Church (Rome) Missions.
