
She was born Sept. 3, 1921, in Anderson, S.C., the daughter of Roland Marlowe Hughes and Pearl Hopkins Hughes. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Paul Franklin Efird Sr., in 2012. She was of the Lutheran faith and a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Rome.
She was known to all for her compassion, generosity, and nurturing spirit. Her greatest joy was being a wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She is survived by daughter Kathy Williams, and her husband, Alec, of Atlanta; son John Efird of Atlanta; son Paul Efird Jr., and his wife, Stephanie, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and daughter Jane Downs of Adairsville. She is also survived by grandson Matthew Williams, his wife, Kim, and great granddaughters Campbell, Sarah Grace, and Kathryn all of Pawleys Island, S.C.; and grandson Stephen Williams, his wife, Nicole, and great granddaughter, Isabella, all of Atlanta.
Both visitation and a graveside service was held Tuesday, March 8, at 1:00 p.m. at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, 2549 Shorter Avenue, in Rome.
Mom was comforted in her last years by devoted caregivers Carolyn Barton, Jill Bryant, Tiffany Cross, Hilda Davis, Stephanie Freeman, Emily George, April Jones, Valerie Jones, Sheila Nichols, and Ollie Whatley. The family is grateful to the staff at Homestead Hospice, especially Jessica Blaylock and Misty McCarley.
