Martha Kelly Matthews

Mrs. Matthews was born February 7, 1921, the daughter of the late Julia Thompson Kelly and Judge James Frederick Kelly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Kelly Zschau in 2007.

Mrs. Matthews attended Shorter College and was of the Methodist faith. She was an accomplished artist and taught school for a period of time. She later was associated with Toles, Temple and Wright as a real estate agent for a number of years. Mrs. Matthews was a longtime member of the D.A. R. and loved to cook.

Survivors include one sister, Frances Kelly Dent, Rome; and nieces and nephews, Fred and Julia Dent, Rome, Jim and Ali Dent, Flynt, TX, Dianne Z. Beattie, Raleigh, NC, Ed and Bailey Zschau, Raleigh, NC, and Marilyn and Frans Baars, Oakland, CA; and several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at 3 p.m. at the Griffin Memorial Chapel of Daniel’s Funeral Home, Rome, with Dr. Joel Snider officiating. Entombment will be in the family crypt at East View Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Brooke Temple, Ronnie Mixon, Fred Dent, Tom Waguespack and Stephen Patton.

The family will receive friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, from 2 until 3 p.m. and wishes to thank those at Heyman HospiceCare who provided such good care and support.
