
Born May 19, 1924, in Adairsville, GA, Mrs. Peek was the daughter of James Calvin Kerce, Sr., and Florence Mae Orr Kerce. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 32 years, Ted Campbell; her second husband of 18 years, Marshall Peek; four brothers, James Spencer Kerce, Raymond O. Kerce, William F. (Bill) Kerce, and James Calvin (Jake) Kerce, Jr.; one sister, Alma Kerce Shannon; and two nephews, Tracy Kerce and Charles Baker.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Campbell, of Rome, GA; nephews, Tom Kerce (Brenda), Charleston, SC, Mike Shannon (Connie), Ooltewah, TN, and Dempsey Kerce (Kathy), Kingston, GA; nieces, Denise Shannon Alexander (Marty), Fayetteville, GA, Joy Kerce Daniel, Rome, and Sandra Roper, Covington; and a step-granddaughter, Beth Dial Jordan (Phil), Spanish Fort, AL. From 1995 until 2011, Miriam was honored to be a step-grandmother to Chris and Michael Hewitt, who also survive.
Mrs. Peek was a 1941 graduate of Girls’ High, Rome, GA, and a 1942 graduate of Rome Business College. Throughout her career, she held accounting and payroll positions at Anchor Rome Mill, Trend Mills and retired in 1994 from Marglen Industries as payroll and accounting supervisor and assistant to the chief financial officer.
Miriam loved God and her church family. She was an active member of Maple Street Baptist and Second Avenue Baptist Church for 75 years. She was a Deacon Emeritus, taught Sunday school for 30 years, participated in the Homebound Ministry and was a proud member of the J.O. Y. Sunday School Class. She had a real heart for missions, having served in many of the missions organizations of the church.
Mrs. Peek’s memorial service was held Saturday, January 23, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Second Avenue Baptist Church in Rome with the Rev. Monty Stallins officiating. Visitation was prior to the service from 10 until 11 a.m. at the church. A private interment was held earlier in the week at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
