
Roma Curtis Griffin, 76, widow of Thomas B. Griffin, former owner of Daniel’s Funeral Home, of 148 Vinings Court, passed away Wednesday morning, January 12, 2011, at her residence after an extended illness.
Mrs. Griffin was born July 24, 1934, in Rome, the daughter of the late Thelma Strange Curtis Gilliland and Clay Curtis. She grew up in Rome and was a graduate of Rome High School (1952) where she was a member of the band. Early in her professional career, she was employed by U. S. Civil Service at Parris Island, SC, U. S. Marine Base, where her position required, and she received, top security clearance.
For over 20 years, she was employed in management at General Electric Employees Federal Credit Union, now Coosa Valley Federal Credit Union. She was a former member of the board of directors of the Georgia Credit Union League and the Georgia Credit Union Affiliates. In 1984, she was chosen by a statewide panel of Credit Union officials as Credit Union Professional of the Year, representing the State of Georgia. She also served as state coordinator for the Georgia Credit Union Youth and Family Involvement Board, the program for youth and family marketing. She was a speaker at the National Youth Involvement Board’s annual conference in Madison, WI. She also served for a time as a member of the advisory council for the Center for Economic Education at Berry College, served on the Floyd County Council for Home Economics and Vocational Education, and listed in the Georgia Directory for Economic Education.
She resigned from the Credit Union in 1987 to work alongside her husband, Thomas Bowen Griffin, owner of Daniel’s Funeral Home, where she continued as a Consultant until her death. A former longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served on the Board of Stewards, and the Board of Trustees, as well as president of the Women of the Church, taught Sunday School and was a youth counselor for the Youth Fellowship. She later was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she served as an Elder and Worship Chairman. At the present time, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rome and also attended Trinity UMC. She was a member of the Coosa Country Club, the Rome Symphony Association and was a former member and president of the Camellia Garden Club, and also served as chaplain for the Laurel District of the Garden Club of Georgia.
Preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Bowen Griffin, in 1999, and her parents, she is survived by two sons, Bryan G. (Jan) Hall, Kingston, and David L. (Janet) Hall, Highlands Ranch, CO; nine grandchildren,
Kelli Hall (Shane) Dover, Julie Hall (Jesse) Burkhalter, Emily Hall, and Molly Hall, all of Rome; Meredith Hall, Ben Hall and Ben Silver, all of Kingston, and twins, Thomas Hall and Tanner Hall, of Highlands Ranch, CO; two great grandsons, Hunter Dover and Maddox Russell; one sister, Eulaine Curtis (Paul W.) Camp, Rome; one brother, Jerry (Linda) Curtis, Rome; brother-in-law, Weyman (Claudette) Griffin; and a number of nieces and nephews; and her devoted pets, Bodie and Classy May.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 15, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Flannagan and Dr. David Campbell officiating. Interment will be in the East View Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ben Hall, Ben Silver, John Camp, David Gentry, Bill Curtis, John Stephenson, Jimmy Sessia, Shane Dover and Jesse Burkhalter. Honorary pallbearers will be residents of the Oaks at Collinwood and the Daniel’s Funeral Home Staff.
The family will receive friends at Daniel’s Funeral Home on Friday, January 14, 2011, from 5 until 8 p.m.
