

Virginia (Ginny) Sue Reeves Massing, age 83 died peacefully March 5, 2017 at her home in Rome, Georgia after a long illness. Ginny was born January 15, 1934 in Thomaston, Georgia, the daughter of the late Joel Farley Reeves and Virginia Hardy Reeves.
Ginny is survived by her eldest son Thomas Hardy Massing and wife Theresa of Woodstock, Georgia and her youngest son Tony Douglas Massing and wife Marsha of Cartersville, Georgia, her half-brother Joel Jack Farley Reeves of Atlanta, grandchildren Amy Massing, Brittany Williams and her fiancé Tim Johnson, John Williams and his wife Micahlene, Peter Williams, Katie Massing, Keaton Massing, Todd Williams, a great grandson Evan Williams and many friends and other family members.
Ginny was an avid reader but she truly loved baseball and football. She was very active in playing softball throughout her life. She also was an excellent swimmer and loved the outdoors. She was known as the “Bird Lady” of Armuchee where she had turned her back yard into a bird sanctuary and won an award from the National Wildlife Habitat Federation.
Ginny attended Robert E. Lee High School in Thomaston, Georgia where she was an honor student and involved in many clubs and sports. Upon graduation, she attended nursing school at Piedmont in Atlanta where she received her degree.
Ginny then moved to Houston, Texas and worked as an OR Nurse at M. D. Anderson. While there she met a handsome Air Force Lieutenant Ralph Richard(Dick) Massing. They married October 25, 1957 at a Methodist Church in Harris, Texas. After time with the Air Force they moved to San Francisco, California where they had two sons, Thomas and Tony.
Ginny worked as an OR nurse at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. Their next move brought them to Rome, Georgia. After working a short time at Floyd Hospital, she went to Georgia Baptist Hospital for her nurse anesthetist degree. After about eight years she was lured into accepting the position of operating room supervisor at Redmond Hospital where she both set up and ran the operating room until her retirement after 40 years of service.
