
He was the son of the late Myrtle Barrett Raines and Gus Franklin Raines. He graduated with honors from Rome High School. He spent four years in the US Army during WWII. After returning from the army, he entered Mercer University where he graduated with both BA and MA degrees. He received his Ed.S. degree from Auburn University and did additional studies at Columbia University and Colorado State University. Warner Raines spent 38 years working in education. He served in the Troup County School System for many years as principal of elementary schools. He was associate superintendent of Meriwether County Schools, director of Middle Georgia Cooperative Education Service Agency (CESA), director of Regional Education Service Agency (RESA) and retired from Peach County Schools as assistant superintendent.
Mr. Raines was an avid stamp collector and helped many young people start albums. He was a member of the American Philatelic Society.
Warner Raines was a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Valley, Georgia. Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Pearl Traylor Raines, sister Frances Raines of Rome, brother Donald C. Raines of Indianapolis, IN, nieces Laura (Greg) Yaramishyn and Beth Raines, two great-nieces, one great-great niece, one great-great nephew, two aunts and two cousins.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, February 13 at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, Rome,GA with Dr. James F. VanDyke officiating. The family received friends at Oaknoll from 1:00 until 2:00 the day of the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church, Fort Valley, Georgia 31030 or to the Smile Train, P.O. Box 96231, Washington, DC or a favorite charity. Daniels Funeral Home, Rome, GA had charge of the arrangements.
