1922 - 2010
The family of Doug Fisher are sad to announce his passing at the age of 88 years on March 25th, 2010, at the Rosetown Union Hospital after a lengthy illness at home.
Douglas Leonard Fisher was born to Jacob and Amalia Fisher on March 6th, 1922 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan. He was the eldest son and third child in a family of six children. He was born to a farm family and was a hard worker from an early age. After travelling across the country working in numerous jobs, he settled in Rosetown, deciding farming was his passion. About that same time, he met the love of his life Mary MacDonald, and married her in 1951. They farmed together for fifty-eight years. His greatest joy in life was his family including son Dale, daughter Donna and her two children, Chris and Johnna. He meant the world to his family and will forever remain in their hearts.
Doug loved farming, and farmed with his son Dale for thirty-six years. He built his farm on a foundation of hard work, honesty, and integrity. It is sometimes said that qualities like integrity, kindness and wisdom are in short supply these days, but the people who say such things must never have known Doug. Doug showed his family that a man’s strength is not the force of his hand or his voice, but the kindness of his heart. And his heart was huge!
Doug’s contagious smile and sense of humour won many friends. He loved to tell his numerous stories and ALWAYS had an ear to listen to yours. People were important to Doug and he would never forget a name or face, and took a true interest in their lives. Always willing to lend a hand, he was an excellent neighbour and a dedicated Elks member for many years.
His busy life was filled with playing crib with friends and family, curling, and working with his cattle and horses. He loved his road trips, especially the ones to Medicine Hat to see his family. Doug will influence our lives even when he isn’t with us, and will be sadly missed by many.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife Mary; his son Dale; and his daughter Donna (Ron) and her children Chris and Johnna; brother Bob; sisters Evelyn and Eleanor; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Amalia Fisher; his brother David and sister-in-law Jean and their son Grant; his sister Vi and brother-in-law Alex Hagen; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 3, 2010 from the Rosetown United Church. Interment of cremated remains will follow the service in the Rosetown Cemetery. Lunch and a time of fellowship will follow the interment in the Lower Hall of the United Church.
If friends and family so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations in Doug’s memory can be made to either the Rosetown and District Health Centre Foundation or the Dr. Alex Ositis Foundation. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.clementsrosetownfuneralhome.com
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Clements Rosetown Funeral Home, Rosetown, SK (306) 882-2662.
