Charles Eugene Weaver was born on September 21, 1931, in Los Angeles, CA. He passed away on December 1, 2022, in Penryn, CA. Charlie is preceded in death by his parents (Lester and Irene) and brothers: Thomas and Russell. He is survived by his wife, Karen and four children: Kay Weaver, Richard Weaver, Donna (Sam) Freshour, and Jim Weaver. Charlie was also the grandfather to six and the great-grandfather to four.
Charlie always provided service to the people of the United States. He was in the Air Force from 1950-1954 and after completing his service returned to Los Angeles and joined the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department where he promoted to the rank of sergeant. He left the Sheriff’s Department after eight years and joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in 1964. He was a motorcycle officer and promoted through the ranks to Captain (Commander) and was assigned to Oakland, San Francisco, and retired as Captain of the Napa Office.
Charlie had many interests to keep him busy and happy. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and going to jazz concerts with friends. He had a 1942 Jeep he restored and drove in a few parades. He received his private pilot’s license in 1988. In 1995, Charlie and Karen moved to Penryn, CA and he turned in his pilot’s license in for a saddle and reins. He and Karen bought a couple horses and enjoyed riding together. In 2005, both Charlie and Karen purchased motorcycles and would often go to breakfast and sightseeing. During the summer he especially enjoyed going to Maui and sitting on the lanai and watching the waves roll in.
Charlie was fascinated by rail travel and as a young child would accompany his father who was a motorman for Pacific Electric Streetcars in Los Angeles. In the early 1980’s Charlie became a docent for the Sacramento Railroad Museum and was assigned to the handcar program and narrated on Amtrak from Sacramento to Reno.
Although Charlie had memory problems the last few years, he always had a wonderful sense of humor and was very quick witted and loved to bestow one-liners on anyone within hearing distance. Charlie always lived life to the fullest. On his final day he did what he wanted. He watched a documentary on the Daylight Steam Train and then took his final nap. Charlie will always be in our hearts. We are all better for having him in our lives.
