Born April 21, 1922 to Polly and Guy Merrill of Klamath Falls, Oregon, Jeanne passed away peacefully on Friday October 21, 2011 at her home in Carmichael, in the company of her beloved family, husband Tom and sons Tom and Evan.
As a young woman, Jeanne took a train to Anchorage, Alaska with $100 and nothing else but her appetite for adventure. Taking a position with Northwest Orient Airlines, she soon met Tom, who was stationed at Alaska’s Elmendorf Airbase. Jeanne and Tom married on December 9, 1951. Tom’s Air Force postings took the couple to Montgomery, Alabama, where Tom and Evan were born, then to Washington D. C., and finally Japan, a nation that Jeanne adored. After four years in Japan, the Auberrys settled in Carmichael in 1964.
A Life Master Bridge player (“earned back in the old days, when it was harder!”), Jeanne remained an avid and fearless traveler, who once sneaked onto the Taj Mahal grounds to see the full moon. Other favorite destinations included the Soviet Union, China shortly after its opening to Western tourism, and numerous trips to Africa. In 2009, Jeanne took a climactic cruise to Tahiti with son Evan, Evan’s partner John Bressan, her sister Betty Ganong, and other extended family members and friends.
Jeanne is also survived by her beloved sister Ruth O'Conner, brother-in-law Barry O'Conner, brother Jimmy Merrill, sister-in-law Kathryn Newman, daughter-in-law Jean Liebmann, and honorary son Gary Meyer. Other survivors include her nieces and nephews, and innumerable friends of all ages.
Jeanne’s attitude toward life can be summed up in the words of a favorite plaque that she kept in her home:
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming, “Wow, what a ride!!!”
Even as her physical strength ebbed, Jeanne maintained her family and social lives, and remained positive and strong-minded until the last day of her life. She will forever be remembered for her love for her family, warmth toward everyone who was fortunate enough to meet her, her energy, humor, and always abundant joy in living.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Eskaton Village Carmichael Fireside Room, 3939 Walnut Ave., Carmichael on Saturday, November 5, at 2 p.m. Donations in Jeanne’s memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders or the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
