Jeffery K Nicolaysen, 61, passed away in his home in Citrus Heights, California, on January 25, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He was born in Santa Maria, California, to Donald “Nick” and Doris (Singleton) Nicolaysen, coming home to the welcome of big brother Gary. Jeff spent his early years in Santa Maria and Lompoc, and finally Goleta where he attended school at Kellogg Elementary, Goleta Valley Jr High and Dos Pueblos High School. Jeff earned his degree in Accounting from San Diego State University, returned to the Santa Barbara area and was employed by the Accounting Firm of Perry & Bordofsky. Soon after he was certified as a Public Accountant.
In 1985 Jeff began his family; he married the former Cynthia Thompson Gerber, became a proud Dad to Bradley Gerber, and relocated to Citrus Heights where they welcomed son Jeffery “Brent” in 1988. In 1990 the family moved to Rocklin and welcomed third son Trevor in 1991. Jeff was an extraordinary father and husband.
Jeff was employed by CCPOA from 1986 until he retired in 2015. A keen supporter of workers’ rights in his personal life, he was proud to use his professional skills to support those who walk “the toughest beat in the state.”
Committed to his community and with a special heart for children, Jeff coached youth soccer for 15 years, beginning with Under-14 in Santa Barbara as a single young man and mentor, and continuing with younger age groups in both Citrus Heights and Rocklin, where he added T-Ball and Rocklin HS track & field (shot-put) to his schedule. When Brent’s love of swimming led to the Sierra Marlins, the family managed the year-round team’s snack bar for ten years.
Jeff was a fervent advocate for excellent and accessible public education. He was twice elected to the Rocklin Unified School District Board of Education, was a founding member of Rocklin Academy, and served on the Academy Board for several years. Continuing with his servant heart, Jeff volunteered his financial skills for the Rocklin Community Covenant Church Board as their Stewardship Chairman through the 1990s.
Jeff leaves behind his beloved wife, Cindy Nicolaysen, son Brad Gerber & daughter-in-law Christina Cooper (Venice), and sons Jeffery Brent Nicolaysen & Trevor Nicolaysen (Citrus Heights). He also leaves brother and good friend Gary Nicolaysen & his wife Carol, as well as many dearly loved nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
A Celebration of Jeff’s Life will take place at 11:00 am on February 24, 2018, at Lambert Funeral Home in Roseville, California. Memorial gifts in Jeff’s memory may be made to the ALS Therapy Development Institute, MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association), SPCA, or one of the many organizations working on behalf of children.
