Happy birthday Dad. It has been another year. It will be eight years this December and I still miss you as much today as I did eight years ago. 

Ari is now nine and smart as ever. Sean is now four and every bit the little bruiser you would love. They are getting so big and everyday I wish you were here to see them growing up. It has been one of those times where talking to you would make life so much easier. Between work and home a little chat with Dad would make things better. I do not know how you managed to keep everyone together, and everyone happy. That was just one of your speacial abilities. I could really use that pat on the head with that big paw you call a hand right now. How I miss being able to pick up that phone and call you with my problem of the day. It always amazed me how we could talk back and fourth for an hour never resovle the problem but I always felt better. I miss you old man.

In four days you will have been gone for one year. I write this in the hope that you can somehow know that despite time going on, you are missed just as much now as you were a year ago. I think about you on a daily basis. I wish that you could be here.  I wish that you could see your Granddaughter grow up.  I wish that you could be here to watch football with me.
 
Every once in a while I catch myself wanting to call you on the phone. It is hard not having you to talk to. I guess that is something I took for granted. I figured you would always be there. In my mind you were like the mountains, forever. The thought never crossed my mind that you would one day be gone. I am glad that we had as much time as we did together.
 
Your beautiful grandbaby is three now, and she can point you out in any picture. She knows that you drove the big trucks and she loves them. She likes to have me chase them down on the freeway just so she can see them up close. She loves you Dad, even though you are not here she knows who you are. I will do everything I can to make sure she knows how great you truly are.

I am not an overly emotional person, you know that Dad. Right now as I sit here trying to write this letter for you, it is just as hard now as it was then. I have the wall of Dad in my office at home. Every picture on that wall has you in it. I truly hope that somehow, somewhere you are getting this letter. I want you to know how much you mean, not only to me but to our whole family. Dad I love you, and I miss you.

I just wanted you to know that I think about you quite often. You even came to me in a dream once. In the dream I told you I believe people should attend their own funerals. That it was the right thing to do. You smiled at me and put your hand on my shoulder. You said something to me, but I do not remember what you said. I really wish I could remember!

This is one of my favorite pictures of us together. Unfortunately we don't have very many. I wish we had more. I thought it was so sweet that you wanted to give me a kiss. You didn't even seem nervous about it, which made me smile. You just planted one on me and waited for all the cameras to stop clicking :-) 

I want you to know I am taking care of your son and grand-daughter as best I can. He seems to be doing better on the outside, but I can still feel his pain and sadness when he talks about you. People say that time heals all wounds. I am a firm believer that there are some wounds that just do not heal, no matter how much time goes by. I do believe that time will allow for the opportunity to build up a strength to the pain that we feel. A strength that does not diminish our pain, but allows us to acknowledge the pain we feel and work through it. Time will not heal the loss we feel, nor will time fill the void that you occupied. It has been four weeks since you left, and the pain is still the same. I guess that in time I personally will learn to live with the pain of your loss, and return to some semblance of normalcy.
 
There has never been another person who impacted my life as greatly as you did. You were there to steer me in the right direction if I started to stray off the path that was taking me in the right direction. You taught me how to drive, and even let me drive the El Camino in the yard where you worked. I am sure you knew the whole time that as soon as you started your busy work I was driving like a crazed stuntman from the movies. But you let me be me, and you were proud of me.
 
There were times when I was not the model son. I talked back, I was lazy, I was a teenager. You stuck by me, and advised me in that way that you have, to get my mind right. You were always supportive no matter what endeavor I was trying to entangle myself in. You came to my basketball games in High School. You drove me to my first real world job interview. You were there to congratulate me when I graduated from High school. You were never short on praise, and there was never a time when you didn’t let me know how proud you were of me, and how much you loved me.

The one time you told me you didn’t want me to do something was when I joined the military. It wasn’t that you didn’t want me to join the military, but that you didn’t like my career choice. I thought at the time that EOD was an awesome job to have. I was after all still a teenager even though I was legally an adult.  Even though you did not like my choice you stood by me and told me you were proud. Looking back on it now I can understand why you did not like my choice.
 
There was a time when we both worked for Safeway. We lived together out in Tracy just you and I. That was a very special time for me because it was just the two of us. We spent a lot of time together then, watching movies or going out to eat. I got to know bonanza pretty well, and it was probably the only place where John Wayne was on the T.V. practically all the time. On the whole you were the only roommate I ever got along with 100% of the time, and not because you were my Dad but because we were so much alike. I will never forget that time we had together and I thank you for it.

The day I joined the academy and started down the path to becoming an officer, you were there. You again told me how proud you were of me, and once again never afraid to show me how you felt, you used your trademarked grab me behind the head hug and told me you loved me. The day I graduated from the academy and you came up on that stage and you pinned that badge onto my chest, you told me, Gorilla, I am so proud of you. The first time I called you while I was out on patrol you told me again, son you have made me so proud. Then you told me you loved me and to be careful. Many conversations later you would always end with how proud you were, that you loved me, and to be careful. I will hold those conversations close to my heart and I promise you that I will always be careful. 
 
I remember when you would ask me all the time, when are you going to give me a grandbaby. Well good things to those who wait right. You were there for the birth of my daughter, your granddaughter Ariana. The fact that you made sure nothing was going to stop you from being there to see your new granddaughter should show everyone reading this how much love you had for your family. To see you standing there holding my tiny daughter in your giant hands, gave me not only a sense of pride, love, and joy, but a sense of knowing that there would be no greater force on Earth to protect her from harm. I am saddened to know that she will not get the time with you that she deserves, but I am glad that she got to know you while she could. I promise you that I will tell her of her Vu every chance I get and impress upon her how awesome you truly were.
 
I will be donning your football number this year in the Pig Bowl Dad. I wish with all my heart that you could be here to see it. I will do everything I can to make you proud, to point down at me and say hey, see that one right there, that’s my boy. I have also taken to rooting for your Sea Chickens, who somehow came back from the brink to win their division and make the playoffs despite their 7-9 record. I guess that means I owe you, the Fosters this year.
 
Dad for everything you have done for me for our family I say thank you. I thank you for being there for me every time I needed you. I thank you for bestowing upon me the sense of family that you held so dear. I thank you Dad for making me the man I am today. I choose to believe that this is not goodbye, that it is a see you later. I want you to know and I hope somehow that you do know how I feel about you. You were the greatest influence in the way I shaped my life. I forced myself to the limits in everything I did just to make you proud of me.

If I could change one thing it would be to have you here still. That may sound selfish, and perhaps it is, but that is the only thing I would wish to change. Dad, thank you for being my friend, for being my teacher, for being my mentor, for being my Father. I am a better person because of you. I am a better father because of you. Thank You!
 
For those of you reading this letter, know this, life happens. If I learned anything from my Dad it’s this, tell the people that you love, that you love them. Blood does not make a family, Love makes a family. Don’t let things get in between you and your family. Nobody knows when life is going to change. The best thing you can do is change with it.
 
Dad I love you with my whole heart. I am proud to call myself your son. I have said it before and I will say it again, and again, and again, you were and always will be my friend, my hero, and my Father. I will end this letter, the way we ended our last conversation, I Love you too Dad.

I try my best to be who you wished for me to be, But I am not Trish,Stacey,Julie,Angel,Rick,Mike,Mark or any of your other kids, I am just me. I know I have made many, many mistakes along my life time and I take full responsibility but the four things I am most proud of is my Son,Husband and My Parents. I am proud enough to call myself the luckiest woman on this Earth to be your daughter.
     But now we have parted and your on to your next journey - I only hope to raise Jacob to be the man that you were and are - a loving person, father, our protector, our friend and yes a devoted grandfather,family man and Husband to your baby doll - our mother.
      I know I have been selfish in not wanting to let you go - I couldn't see you in your previous vessel - for my heart already knew you have moved on - I couldn't attend your memorial for the pain was to unbearable and yes the rest of our family and friends were there and I hear you had a beautiful send off by all of them. But this is why I wrote this poem to be with you onto your next journey. When you left you left a whole in this family that no one can fix - not a one of any us want or is willing to let you go.
       I am very proud to have been blessed to have you as my father - I got lucky to have had you as my friend and with that relationship there is no end.
So I didn't and I am not going to say good-bye for all I have to do is step outside at night and look towards the heavens above and see your smiling face and the twinkles in your eyes for they will be the stars twinkling in the never ending skies. With this I know we are parting ways but our paths shall pass again - I love you, Daddy and yes I know, please don't cry.....

You know I never really was the best child growing up - don't think any of us kids were - even the kids you took in and made apart of our family - We always said once your adopted your always apart of our family. To this day I try and follow that example and I have an additional family growing now. I look at this page everyday since I heard it was up and I see just how many lives you have changed in one way or another - whether it was a cousin - a friend of one of us kids or someone you deemed worthy enough to be called family and now we are all going in different directions and that saddens me. You and Mom were the magnets that fused us together and now apart of that magnet is missing and the rest of us are spreading apart - I know I have disappointed you a lot in my life time and mom I have mad her angry many times for making you cry - But there were two people in this family that anytime that any of us screwed up could come running to for that helpful ear - that warm embrace - a tissue to wipe our face and even sometimes that unwanted advice that usually turned out to be just what we needed. I can't help myself but to look back now and see how many times I screwed up and made you angry or disappointed and I wish I could take them all back - just to hear your funny little remarks or I am proud to call you my daughter or for just one more I love you little girl and maybe just maybe a hug. I would almost give up anything I have to get one more day with you - I am sorry everyone is hurting and I am sorry I can't fix it - you were Mr. Fix it or as Jacob says - Super Vu - You will always be a hero not only to me - but to everyone's life you touched. Your Parents are very proud of the man they raised because you were the Man everyone wanted to be just like - they say daughter's marry their father's well Daddy I think I finally got it right this time. I only hope the rest of the family finds what they are looking for and keeps your love in their hearts - if they do that then you will show us the way to be and when our turn comes to be with you again - you will smile your best smile and wrap us in your arms that can go on for a mile. And once again we shall feel that love and pride you bestowed on each and everyone around you. Greatest man I ever knew, was my Uncle Ralph. His physical presence was only belittled by the amount of compassion in his heart. Never in a million years would I have thought you would leave us so soon. I didn't believe it when I heard.  I had to call back and ask again just to be sure. In my mind there was just NO possible way I heard correctly. 

The next step was to break the news to my husband, your son. It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life! How do I tell the man I love that his hero, his mentor, his FATHER is gone? There is no good way to go about it. No matter how I did it he was going to be devastated. And he was. 

I know I have told you before that Mark is just like you. You both are strong on the outside with a nice squishy center. There was one day in particular when I saw that squishy center. You told me you were concerned about Cindi’s heath and you started to cry. I could see in your eyes all the love you felt for her. Until that day the only man I had ever seen cry was my dad. It was not something I was used to. All I could do was grab you and hug you as tight as I could. I was touched by your sensitivity and your intense love for your wife. 

Your heart was so big and so warm. I think that is why you were so hot all the time. Your heart was pumping out so much love with every beat that it radiated heat throughout your whole body. Sounds a bit corny but that is what I believe having known you.   

You took me into your family like you did with so many others before me. You made sure I understood I was your daughter too. If I had a problem, you told me you would handle it. When I was scared and didn’t know if Mark wanted to marry me, you assured me he loved me and would marry me someday. You then told Mark you would hold him at gun point and make sure he married me. I thought that was just awesome and unbelievably funny. 

You were there when our child was born. We were so happy you made it. When I heard your voice I could feel the pride and excitement in Mark well up and fill the room. He was so happy you were there to meet our new baby girl. 
  
You have done so much for our family and every one around you. I don’t know if you were even aware of the impact you made while you were with us. Thank you for being the man you were and for teaching your son to be the same. You will be deeply missed. We love you.

VaVu aka Grandpa - Mommy sure misses you and we have been watching you twinkle in the Heavens above us - I remember you calling me "Your Little Man" but then mommy says you also called me "Your little Monkey" I won't have to forget those because mommy says you will still call me that when we are all on our sleep train and are going to our different places. Mommy says not to say bye because you really haven't left us, your in our dreams our hearts and I can still talk to you whenever I want. VaVa is sad because mommy says she lost her best friend but when Va is ready and when she sleeps me,mommy and Vavu will come pick her up and she can go on sleep adventures with us - So please help mommy and Va remember that you may not be here in our waking hours but all we have to do is sleep and you will always be there when we need you. I can't wait for our next adventure maybe this time we can fly all the across the Heavens and show mommy and Va our secret adventures so they can live and laugh the way you always made me smile by calling me "Your Little Man or Your Little Monkey". I Love you Bunches and I will see you in my dreams..Remember you maybe gone from us here but you will live on in our hearts and minds and like Uncle Mark says "Gone but Never Forgotten."
