Robert J. Liehr passed away on Wednesday, January 25th 2023 with his trusted dog Rex by his side. He taught American history for thirty-six-years and left an indelible mark on his colleagues, friends and students. His wry New Yorker exterior belied his warm spirit. He personified Franciscan ideals of love, peace and service.
Bob was raised in Rockaway Beach, New York by his loving late mother Gloria Carcanis, step-father Arthur Carcanis, aunt Grace and grandmother Margaret. He graduated from San Jose State and began his teaching career at Bret Harte Middle School in 1971. He served in the U.S. Army before returning to teach at John Steinbeck Junior High, Gunderson High, San Jose High Academy and Liberty High School. History came to life in his classroom, as he supplemented his teachings with the music, film and culture of the era. He inspired intellectual curiosity, creativity and criticism. He taught students how to think, not what to think.
In retirement, Bob spent his days reading voraciously, watching his favorite classics and listening to music that evoked his happiest memories. He was an excellent conversationalist and never ran dry on topics to discuss. The stories of his childhood and life were rich with detail and meaning.
Above all Bob was deeply loving, thoughtful and gracious. A modest sage, seemingly unaware of his impact. On Fridays, he would end his class with his enigmatic phrase ‘Don’t drink too much Coke!’ It was his way of saying, don’t live life in excess. He will be deeply missed and although his light is dimmer now, it will never be extinguished as his legacy lives on though those whom he inspired.
For all who wish to pay their respects, interment will be at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery on March 7th, 2023 at 2:30pm.
