The world lost a special lady with the passing of Shirley who represented everything that is so unique and endearing in a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a friend. She created life and showered those lives with unending love and support. She represented everything a husband could ever hope for in a life’s partner. To those who knew Shirley as a friend she is irreplaceable. A piece of our hearts has gone with her in her journey to heaven and with her departure the world is now a little less bright.
Shirley was born on October 7, 1935 to Lucille and Frank Hicks in Sacramento, CA. She leaves behind her husband of 60 years, John, her sons, Jerry of Roseville, CA and Mark (Cathy) of Heber City, Utah, her beloved granddaughter, Anna Petkovich, her sister Dolores Wendt (Larry), Her sister Marilyn Wiemeyer preceded her into rest, as did her brothers-in-law Vern Wiemeyer and Bruce Townsend. She also leaves behind her brother-in-law Frank Petkovich (RoseMarie), and nieces and nephews Eleanora Friedrich (Tom), Karl Wendt (Tiffany), Rex Townsend , Elizabeth Townsend, Kathy Fee, Debra Verniest, Steven Petkovich, Micheyl Hiller (David), Phyllis Mank, and her YaYa luncheon group who have all been friends since high school days.
Shirley’s hobbies were crafting, sewing, and stained glass. She stayed in touch with her junior high school sewing/cooking teacher who was a great influence on her for more than 60 years. She enjoyed serving on the committees of her high school reunions, was active in PTA and Cub Scouts, and sat through many chilly Little League games cheering on her sons.
Shirley was employed by dentists and doctors for more than 25 years, and the State of California for 15 years. She was always interested in the medical field and worked for the Department of Health, Emergency Medical Section, working on the original guidelines for Emergency Response Guidelines, EMTs, and the 911 system. She always said that it was the most gratifying position she ever held with the exception of being a wife to John and mother to her sons and grandmother to her only grandchild, Anna.
She will be grievously missed by her family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing her, including her beloved humming birds and Libby, her favorite four legged friend.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, October 9th at St. Clare Catholic Church, 1950 Junction Blvd., Roseville at 10:00am. A Memorial Service in the Morris Hall of St. Clare Catholic Church to follow.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a donation to an organization of your choice.
