I am saddened to hear about Ed’s passing. As a graduate student at the UofM who had only played online chess, my first official USCF tournament was at the EMCC. Ed treated every player with the same respect, regardless of their age, gender, race, or experience. He had an extremely strong work ethic and made an indelible impact on the Michigan chess community. 

I was honored to play a game against him at the Wiener-Rubenstein memorial tournament in April. Since there were an odd number of players, I would get a 1-point bye regardless of the outcome. He played the Ruy Lopez, and I countered with the Berlin defense, with a score of 0-1. After the game, he told me that I earned that win, and that he had seen significant improvement since my first OTB 9 months before. Those words meant a lot to me, and they have driven me to continue growing as an adult improver. 

Ed will be missed by all, and my condolences go out to his family and friends.

Hello family and friends of Ed Mandell. Let me extend my condolences to you in this difficult time.

Dr. Mandell was a blessing to chess players like me and my friends. He hosted numerous tournaments we were happy to participate in.

What's more, Dr. Mandell even offered me one of my first real jobs. Whatever he saw in that 18 year old, I'm not really sure. But I'm glad he trusted me to teach chess to grade schoolers through ATKM. I was happy to work for him before graduating high school and moving away.

I'll pray for him and his loved ones. Best wishes in this difficult time.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Ed Mandell’s passing. He was a truly great man whose presence made a lasting impact on my life and the lives of so many others. Ed had a rare gift for lifting people up, leading with integrity, and leaving everyone he met better than he found them. His legacy of kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

We send our deepest sympathy to Ed's family and friends.  To know him is to love him.  We have known Ed over 30 years.  As a single mom, he became a fine example of what could be achieved in life through the world of chess and disciple.  Mr.  Mandell had a heart of gold for everyone.  He always shared "golden nuggets of knowledge and experience".  He had compassion for others.  The legacy he and Patty built will live on!  Rest easy, our friend! to the family ed mandell, deep sympathy for loss a wonder chess teacher and enthusiast of chess!played a few times against him but he was always there to sell his chess equipment at big chess tournaments, in michigan! so i hope you can keep the chess activities, at his store!? so once again, sorry for your loss!!??

Im so sorry to hear about Ed's passing.  I've known Ed for 20+ years and in fact the first chess tournament I ever played in was at the Mandell Chess Club....the classic Wiener Rubenstein memorial tournament!! :)  I will miss Ed dearly.  He was a friend, a scholar, and a gentleman.

Ed was a kind soul. The first day I met him I was overcome with a sense that this was an extremely generous and open hearted man. I always had a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for him, we shared many laughs. I enjoyed talking business with him, talking about chess and chess history with him and we once played a very interesting tournament game against each other. 

My condolences and deepest sympathy to his family and friends. 
He will be missed but never forgotten.

Ed Mandell and I were contemporaries (1943) and fraternity brothers (Alpha Epsilon Pi). When I became active in the chess world, he was one of my mentors in helping me to become the TD that I am. I will carry his faith in me forever. 
He was ALWAYS busy organizing and often directing chess enents not just for experienced players but for beginners as well. In my mind he was the poster boy for promoting chess in Michigan. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

No one outworked Ed he taught and organized Tournaments right up to the end.  He was cool to the beginners and GMs with the same friendly and easy going way.  1000s of people cared about Ed because he cared about 1000s of people.
