concerning you.”
Dr. Bernard Yowkow Amponsah-Kumi was born on 19th June, 1969 to Mr. Jacob Danyame Amponsah Coomson of the Kona Br3to Aboradze Clan of Mpohor and Mrs. Agnes Nana Amissah Amponsah Coomson of the Nsona Clan of Cape-Coast in Ghana (both of blessed memory).
Bernard was the fifth of six sons (Stephen, Charles, Bernard, and Kojo Kumi), two of whom died in infancy. The family was a Christian family who fellowshipped with the Catholic Church. Due to the nature of their father’s work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ghana, Bernard and his brothers spent most of their early childhood years growing up in different parts of the world including Switzerland, Eswatinini (formerly Swaziland) and Australia.
Bernard obtained his middle school education at the Burma Camp Primary & Middle School Complex in Accra, Ghana from where he graduated in the 1981/1982. He gained admission to one of the most reputable High schools in Ghana, St. Augustine’s College in CapeCoast, where he joined his elder brother, Charles to study General Science. In St. Augustine’s, he resided in St. John’s house where he established a close friendships with most of his co-housemates who nicknamed him ‘unlaughable jaws’ due to his always serious demeanor.
Before Bernard could graduate from St. Augustine’s, his father took up a diplomatic appointment in India which necessitated the relocation of the entire family to India. He continued his secondary education at Mount Carmel School, an independent Christian School in New Delhi. Due to his outstanding performance in his final exams, he gained admission to study medicine at one of the top medical colleges in India; the Maulana Azad Medical College.
Bernard successfully completed his medical course in 1993 and proceeded to Ghana where he was appointed as a senior medical officer at the Korle Bu teaching hospital in Accra, Ghana where he worked for about seven years until the year 2000.
On 20th November, 1999, Dr. Kumi got married to Esther Adjoa Adams at the Holy Spirit Cathedral Catholic Church in Accra, Ghana. Three months after, the couple migrated to the United States of America and settled in Atlanta, Georgia. Their marriage was blessed with three girls: Agnes, Bernadine, and Belinda Kumi.
Unfortunately, Bernard had to involuntarily retire from the medical profession due to a fatal cerebral stroke he suffered which led to other severe health complications. Despite the struggles and health complications he faced, one thing Bernard never did was to give up on the hope he had for a better future. Day after day, he was always hopeful of a better tomorrow despite the numerous challenges he faced in life. One thing we know for sure is that Bernard was a fighter who strongly fought for his life until he drew his last breath despite all the challenges life threw at him.
Bernard was very well read and knowledgeable. He took great delight in making contributions to diverse topics that were of interest to him. The library was one of his favorite places to be. He loved to always be well updated on world events and especially with regards to issues pertaining to the social and economic development of his home country, Ghana.
Bernard was passionate about football and other sporting activities; always keenly following ongoing league competitions. He was keenly interested in the outcome of the recently ended African cup of Nations (AFCON) competition, never missing any of Ghana’s matches although he was several miles away from home. He was a good communicator who was always ready to share his experiences in life with those he loved; always encouraging them in the best way he could.
Under tragic circumstances, Bernard was found unresponsive and rushed to Wellstar North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, Georgia on 16th February, 2022 where he sadly passed on to eternity on Friday, 18th February, 2022. While Bernard was in hospital battling for his life, he was surrounded by Esther, his children and via video with his cousin Mary based in Ghana. Everyone hoped for a miracle but we are consoled by fact that our heavenly Father knows what is best for him.
Bernard is survived by his three daughters: Agnes, Bernadine, and Belinda whom he loved dearly until his last days here on earth.
His children and family wish to express their profound gratitude and appreciation to all who supported him in difficult times, especially during his last days on earth.
Bernard, we love you so much and hope you have found the peace you always looked for here on earth in the bosom of our Father and dear Lord Jesus Christ. You are dearly and deeply loved.
REST WELL IN PERFECT PEACE DR. BERNARD YOWKOW AMPONSAH-KUMI!!
