Bernice was born on June 14, 1925, in British West Indies, St Ann, Jamaica, the daughter to the late Henry Stauford Grant and Theodosia Matilda Grier-Grant.
Bernice moved from Jamaica as a young adult, to the United States where she married Lincoln Lloyd Sutherland also from Jamaica and raised a family.
The marriage was blessed with three children, Sonia, Michele and Paul. An avid reader, gardener and tennis player Bernice always remained very active and involved. She maintained a close relationship with her Faith and community at St. David’s Episcopal Church, her Book Club, The Literary Ladies, The Red Hat Society, 25 Sparkling Angelettes of Alpharetta and her Sorority Delta Sigma Theta.
Bernice was not only a servant for the Lord, but she also served her country by working for the United States Air Force as a logistics-engineering specialist. As a graduate of Northeastern University with an MBA, Bernice was always an advocate for higher learning, academics and education.
Along with her parents, Bernice is preceded in death by her husband, Lincoln Lloyd Sutherland. She is survived by her three loving children daughter, Sonia Sutherland-Cruz, and her husband Frank Cruz of Woodstock, Georgia; daughter, Michele Sutherland-Johnson, and her husband Cortez Johnson of Memphis, Tennessee; son, Paul M. Sutherland of Lawrenceville, Georgia, grandchildren, Frank Cruz, Jeffrey Cruz, Christopher Johnson, Blake Johnson; one great-grandchild and many friends
