

Diana was born September 4, 1936 in Atlanta, to Charles Russell Howell and Irene Dye Howell. After graduating Grady High school in Atlanta, she completed finishing school at Chateau Mont Chosi in Lausanne, Switzerland where she learned to speak fluent French and then continued her studies at Emory University.
Upon completing college, she met Gilbert Lowell Butler, an engineer for Western Electric while living in the Ansley Park neighborhood of Atlanta. They fell in love, married, moved to Roswell, GA where they raised their 2 children. She was an active member of the Roswell Historical Society, Roswell Women’s Club, Alliance Francaise French Club, the Huguenot Society, and the First Baptist Church of Roswell.
Diana was a Renaissance woman with many skills and talents. She painted beautiful architectural oil paintings, was a certified lifeguard, a wonderful cook who made marvelous desserts and enjoyed playing piano during her formative years. She completed a master’s degree at Oglethorpe in her early 40’s. She loved gardening, history, reading, antiques, travelling to the beach and to France, popular culture and news events, and more than anything, she was very sociable and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, family and friends.
Special thanks to those who loved, cared for and comforted Diana during her final months including family, friends, volunteers, Georgia Hospice and employees of Vitality.
Diana is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son, Walter David Butler.
Diana is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Butler Eidex (Bill Grove) and grandchildren: Zachary Alexander Eidex, Charles Anthony Eidex (Taylor Grace York).
A celebration of life for family and friends will take place in the chapel at the First Baptist Church in Roswell on Friday October 3, 2025 at 10:00 am.
