Retired Fulton County Police Captain Edward Kvietkus died peacefully Monday, December 13, 2021, at his home in Alpharetta, Georgia. He was 87. “Captain Ed” was born in war torn Lithuania, in 1934. After his father was captured by occupying German forces, his family fled as refugees through Poland, Sweden, and finally Ireland, where he graduated from Christian Brothers College (High School) in Cork, Ireland.
Afterward, he migrated to Canada, became a Canadian citizen, Ed served in Korea under the Canadian Army. Later, he and his family immigrated to the United States, their ultimate destination. He joined the United States Army, became a Military Policeman. He so enjoyed police work, the profession in which he would serve the rest of his life.
Ed like his father, enjoyed boxing and while in the Army he earned many medals or his boxing skills, and always enjoyed “the fights”. Ed completed his military service in the United States Army after returning from Korea.
Soon afterwards, he joined the Columbus Police Department in Columbus, GA, where he was the first policeman on the force to attend college. He later received a Bachelor of Law degree from John Marshall University in Atlanta. He served as a Sheriff’s deputy in Dekalb County, later joining the Fulton County Police Department where he retired in 2003. He deeply loved the Brotherhood of Officers with whom he served. He had the honor of being Aide to the Chairman of the Board of Fulton County Commissioners “Shag” Cates. He also was a Graduate of the FBI Academy, 134th Session, representing Fulton County Police Department at that time. Ed was an Expert Marksman. He designed and developed the Fulton County Firing Range, serving as Range master for many years, teaching and qualifying many officers in marksmanship.
From early childhood, he loved sailing and enjoyed many years on the water at Lake Lanier with his faithful four-legged friends: Diego, Heidi, and Chester. He enjoyed traveling with his family and friends across America, and Europe, and making many trips to Ireland and to The Holy Land.
He was a devoted member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Atlanta where he also served on the Security Team. He was a life long member of Midland Masonic Lodge in Columbus, and also of Yaraab Shrine Temple in Atlanta.
He loved the United States, his nation by choice, not merely by birth. He loved being at home, and he loved most of all his dear wife Juanita, his Angel indeed. He loved his son Edward Jr, his daughter, Megan Levy (Alex), his wonderful grandchildren Daniel and Graham, his sister Rosemarie Beitner, and his nephew Michael Beitner.
He had a special love and appreciation for all his law enforcement brothers (and sisters), his ‘lads’, all of whom he loved to the end.
A special appreciation to Russell Strachen, his faithful caregiver during his last months; the family will forever be appreciative.
Visitation for family and friends will be at the Roswell Funeral Home, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076, on Saturday, December 18, 11 o’clock.
A private graveside service for Ed's family will be at the National Cemetery in Canton, GA at a later date.
The family has requested that remembrances of Edwards life be made in the form of a contribution to Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4465 Northside Drive, NW, Atlanta, 30327.
