Thomas Jan Ivan, age 81, of Midland, MI, passed away on April 22, 2025. Born on May 5, 1943, in Midland to Joseph Steven Ivan and Mary Alice (Bailey) Ivan/Ode, Tom was a devoted father and cherished grandfather. Those who knew him well remember him as a sensitive and caring man who deeply loved those in his life, especially his sons and his grandchildren. He found joy in fishing, playing golf, and woodworking.
Throughout his life, Tom embraced many roles: father, coach, teacher, and businessman. Growing up in a large family with seven brothers, he graduated from Midland High School. He continued his education at Central Michigan University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Education and a master’s in School Administration. While at CMU, he was also a gymnast competing on the trampoline. After teaching and coaching football at Carrollton, Douglas McArthur, and St. Charles High Schools, Tom moved up to teach and coach football at the collegiate level at Northwood Institute. In 1973, he left education to being working for Dow Corning, which brought him to Greensboro, NC, where his two sons, Steve and Ryan, were born. After some time in North Carolina, Tom returned to Midland to be closer to his brothers and the entire Ivan family. After a dedicated nearly 30-year career with the company, Tom retired from Dow Corning in 2001. He eventually moved to Johns Creek, Georgia, where he resided until his passing.
Tom will be deeply missed by his sons, Thomas Steve Ivan and Ryan Nathaniel Schnaith-Ivan; his five grandchildren, Cameron, Sean, Sofia, and Sebastian; his daughter-in-law, Maria Schnaith-Ivan; his partner, Cynthia Vanden Bos; and his four brothers, Mike, Dan, Richard "Dick," and Robert "Bob" Ivan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Steven Ivan and Mary Alice (Bailey) Ivan, and his brothers Pat, Nick, and Phil Ivan.
A funeral to celebrate Tom's life will be held on June 21, 2025, in Midland, MI, with a graveyard service at Old Calvary Cemetery at 11:00am. Family and friends are invited to attend and honor Tom's legacy, and then gather after for a luncheon to share stories and memories.
