Enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18, Bill served during WWII in North Africa, Europe, Japan, and China aboard the USS Delta. He celebrated his 21st birthday in Shanghai.
Bill later had a 38 year career in the insurance industry adjusting claims and investigating insurance fraud. In 1967, he received the North Carolina Insurance Adjuster of the Year Award. In 1990, he retired as Vice President of State Capital Insurance Company. After retirement, Bill enjoyed golf, travel, and volunteering with local community organizations including the American Legion.
Bill was married for 51 years to his beloved wife Kathleen Page Scales, with whom he is now reunited. Bill is survived by his loving children, Lou Anne Scales and William Hinton Scales Jr., daughter-in-law Robin Scales, and loving grandchildren, Nathaniel Hinton Scales and Philip William Scales.
Bill was a kind, charming soul and a loving father, grandfather, and stranger to none. He will be greatly missed.
Graveside Services will be held at Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina, on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 2:00 pm.
