Pona, as she was affectionately known, was born to the late Georgette Amoun and Fouad Sabbagh on July 5, 1928 in Cairo, Egypt.
Pona attended catholic schools in Cairo. She was multi-lingual, versed in English, French, Arabic, Italian, and even Greek. It was there that she met the love of her life, Habib Shedid. They married in 1947 and were blessed with two beautiful children, Regina and John. Her family was extremely important to her, sacrificing her home in Egypt for a better life in America for her children. She wanted an equal opportunity for the futures. Pona and Habib arrived in America in 1969, settling in New Jersey.
As a lover of language and nurturer of the future, Pona was also a high school science teacher and a college instructor. She enjoyed helping others.
She enjoyed sewing, often making quilts with her late daughter- in- law and family. Pona was also known to hand make rosaries, often giving them to her son, John who was deployed to share with the Chaplain and others in need. Cooking was a way for Pona to connect with her family and culture. She would make dishes from the different languages she spoke, creating food and memories that were good for the soul.
Pona never knew a stranger; she was there for anyone who may have needed her. Such a good listener, she would hold all your secrets and let you know your thoughts and worries were safe with her. She took care of everyone around her, nurturing them to health, supporting their dreams, or even seeing them through their earthly transitions. “La Familia” as she referred to her family could always depend on her love and support and it will be greatly missed.
Preceding Pona in death are her parents and her daughter- in- law, Patricia L. Shedid.
Yvonne “Pona” Shedid leaves to cherish her memories and love, her children, Regina (Chaker) Asfour and John H. Shedid; grandsons, Justin (Jasmine) Shedid and Adrian “A.J.” Shedid, and her darling great- grandchildren, whom were the light of her life, Lydia Patricia Shedid and Kaiden Jay Shedid.
Services will be held at St. Brigid Catholic Church on September 8, 2022 at 11AM with a committal service to follow at Green Lawn Cemetery and Mausoleum.
