Lucille Vlahos died peacefully in Carmichael, CA on June 21, 2013 at the age of 93. She was born on July 3, 1919 to Athanasios and Kaliope Bahumes in Denver, CO. 'Yiayia Lou,' as she was affectionately called, was a tireless advocate for children and their education. She worked for 25 years in the San Juan Unified School District as an elementary school teacher. Her influence and devotion were especially evident in the Church of the Annunciation Sunday School, which she began organizing in 1952 by translating Greek lesson plans into English and served as both teacher and Director for 40 years. She supported many educational and philanthropic causes by establishing the Annunciation Parish Library and Archives and through the Philoptochos Ladies Society, Senior League, AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, and Women's Board of the Orthodox Institute at UC Berkeley.
Lucille had an amazing gift for maintaining lifelong friendships! She was an outstanding cook and gracious hostess and was well-known for hosting her friends and family at fabulous holiday and nameday parties with her husband Elias. She was a huge sports fan, and even stormed the court after her grandson's high school basketball team won a game at the buzzer! She traveled extensively throughout Europe, Japan, China, Mexico and the USA. She was a very talented seamstress creating beautiful stitchery, needlepoint and crocheted works. Her flower-arranging and artistic decorating skills were often displayed at church and community affairs.
Lucille was preceded in death by her loving husband, Elias, and son, James. Lucille is survived by her daughter, Carole and son-in-law Marshall Pryor, grandchildren Demetre (Dimitra) Haralambakis and great-grandson, Dino, Michael Haralambakis, Curtis (Arlene) Pryor and Jana Bean. Our family would like to thank Mom's caregivers, Peter and Eunice Garbi, who offered loving care during her last 2 years. Family and friends are invited to Trisagion Services on Wednesday evening at 7:00PM at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 600 Alhambra Boulevard. Funeral services will be on Thursday at 10:00AM at Annunciation Church, with interment at East Lawn Cemetery, 43rd and Folsom Blvd. A luncheon following the interment will be held at the Hellenic Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church Building Fund. Services under direction of Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger Funeral Home.
