Reiko Kurahara entered Nirvana on January 28, 2024. She was born May 19, 1927, in Sacramento California to Yuki and Taka “Betty” Shimada. Reiko was the 2nd of 5 children. In 1942, Reiko and her family were relocated to the Amache internment camp located in Granada, Colorado. After World War II she returned home to Sacramento and worked for the State of California Employment Development Department for 50 years.
Reiko was a devoted and very active member of the Sacramento Buddhist Church where she acquired many lead roles and responsibilities. She volunteered preparing food and goodies each week for the Sunday dharma school kids and parents. Her efforts through the years evolved into “Reiko’s Kitchen and crew”. She was the small but mighty in-charge leader of the popular Buddhist Church Bazaar tempura booth for over 50 years!
At home, Reiko was a devoted mother to her only son Maynard and supported his interests and many sporting activities. She was a fan and proud supporter of the Sacramento Barons basketball organization since the 1970s and started organizing and running Baron’s concession stands selling her specialties to benefit the organization.
As her three grandsons got older, Reiko continued her support of their sports activities by attending every game she could. In her little down time, she could be seen watching a Giants, 49ers, or Kings game on TV.
Reiko was most passionate about her cooking and doing things her way. She was tireless and enjoyed sharing her love through her food and generosity. She was equally passionate about never revealing her recipes and culinary secrets!
Reiko was predeceased by her husband Laverne, parents Yuki and Taka “Betty” Shimada, brothers Robert, Sam and George.
Reiko is survived by her son Maynard (Cindy) Kurahara, grandchildren Garett, Royce (Yari), and Cody Kurahara. Sister Mar Nakata, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to her care team, as well as those who have known Reiko and been touched by her immense passion and joy for life.
A memorial Service will be held in her honor, Friday March 1, 2024, at 2:00pm at the Sacramento Buddhist Church, 2401 Riverside Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95818.
