Ronald Edward Johnston passed away on Friday, February 25, 2022 at the age of 75. He was born on June 20, 1946 in Sacramento, CA, a place he called home for all of his 75 years. Ron graduated from C.K. McClatchy Senior High School in 1964. He went on to serve his country in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. New Jersey from May 1967 to February 1971 where he worked as a baker. After he was honorably discharged, he returned to his hometown of Sacramento and worked as a cook at the Sacramento Inn and El Rancho. The Sacramento City Unified School District became his home away from home for 25 years. He was a custodian at John F. Kennedy High School, and later promoted to School Plant Operations Manager at C.P. Huntington and Martin Luther King Elementary schools.
In Ron’s free time, he loved deer hunting in his Ford Bronco, trout fishing at Silver Lake and deep-sea fishing for halibut and sturgeon in the San Francisco Bay. Ron's love of cooking and baking continued in his civilian life. He loved preparing meals and spending time with family and friends, who could usually find him in the kitchen.
Ron was a devoted husband to his wife, Vicki, for over 42 years and a loving father to his only daughter, Jill, his pride and joy. He had tears in his eyes as he walked her down the aisle on her wedding day, but he never entirely gave her away. He gained a son instead.
During his retirement, Ron loved to vacation in Hawaii and cruise aboard Norwegian Cruise Line. He loved lounging in the sun in his Hawaiian shirts and watching the waves roll onto the sand.
Nothing gave Ron greater joy during his retirement than being called "Papa" by his two grandchildren and acting as their chauffeur after school. He cherished the time he spent with them. He learned the names of all of the Disney princesses and Toy Story characters and enjoyed having little helpers in the kitchen.
Ron is preceded in death by his beloved parents Ronald and Todd. He is survived by his wife Vicki Johnston of 42 years, his daughter Jill Sutter (Bobby) and his grandchildren Addisen and Easton Sutter.
He will always be remembered for his homemade favorites; Maple Nut Ice Cream, Macaroni Salad, BBQ Ribs and Tri-tip, scratch made biscuits, and his grandkids' favorites of French Toast, Macaroni and Cheese and Spaghetti.
