Sam Isamu Morishima

Sam Isamu Morishima, born in Watsonville, CA, passed away on August 14, 2025. The eldest of five siblings, Sam learned from the hard work of his family on their farm and at his father’s small engines shop. A model student and athlete, he excelled at wrestling, judo, and kendo, and loved to surf. He was a natural teacher, sharing his knowledge with family and later teaching skiing to others in exchange for a lift ticket.

After graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology, Sam built a career in biotechnology, working as a chemist before transferring to international marketing. His work took him across the world, where he was known for his humor and kindness. It was through his work that he met his wife, May, and eventually settled in Sacramento, CA, to raise their daughter, Sondra. He treasured his time with his family, with whom he loved to travel and explore nature.

In 1998, Sam founded SnoZone Endless Slope, an indoor ski and snowboard school where he taught students of all ages and abilities, including one chimpanzee movie star. He was an agile skier and boarder, on or off the ski deck. As a teacher, he sought to inspire a passion for lifelong learning, freedom of mobility, and a sense of achievement. He continued to share his expertise at Land Park Ski & Sports and pursued his love of movement by practicing Qi Gong and Tai Chi, deepening his understanding of biomechanics and bodily awareness. He was a regular at the roller rinks, where he was recognized for his seemingly effortless dance and jam skating.

Sam will be remembered for the passion he brought to every question, his tireless work ethic, and his perceptive humor. He was guided by steadfast values: to be humble, honest, kind, and to treat others with integrity.

He is survived by his wife May, daughter Sondra, son-in-law Jason, and grandson Oliver, his mother Matsue, Aunt Sueko, sisters Yvonne, Joyce, and Ruth, brother Stanley, and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
