Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Maryland, Sean maintained friendships around the world and stayed closely connected to the many people whose lives he enriched. He attended Tufts University, where he studied chemical engineering, and Reed College, where he studied physics. He later earned a Bachelor of Science in computer engineering from Portland State University. A lifelong learner and engaged conversationalist, Sean loved debating ideas and keeping up with current events.
Sean was deeply involved in congregational life at B’nai Israel and was known for his dedication to volunteering, serving on committees, and building meaningful friendships. He truly considered the entire congregation his mishpuchah. Always willing to lend a hand, offer a warm smile, or share one of his signature bear hugs, Sean’s warmth, spirit, and generosity touched all who knew him.
Sean led a life full of passion and curiosity. He was an accomplished athlete—swimming, fencing, and wrestling competitively—and loved rugby and softball. He played many instruments, including the euphonium, clarinet, and bassoon. Professionally, his heart was truly in steamfitting. He was a proud union member, a retired steamfitter in Portland, Oregon, and a former apprentice and journeyman instructor with UA Local 290. He was also a licensed electrician and a member of IBEW Local 340, taking great pride in his work and in mentoring others.
Sean is survived by his beloved wife, Jodie Rubenstein Ward; his brother Kevin (Jay) of Washington; his sister Diane (Nick) of Virginia; his sister Susanne (Rob) of Sacramento; his nieces Ruby, Lucy, and Bonnie (Rachel), of Sacramento; and his daughter Naomi (Kris), of Sacramento.
Sean was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Anita Ward, and by his daughter, Catrina Rubenstein Ward, whose memory he held close to his heart.
In a final act of generosity, Sean was an organ donor. By donating his liver, kidneys, a lung, and tissues, he transformed profound loss into hope for others and carried his values forward.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, December 29, at Home of Peace Cemetery, located at 6200 Stockton Boulevard, Sacramento, CA 95824.
If you wish to make a contribution in Sean’s memory, the family recommends donations to Planned Parenthood or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
