Bill became a fourth-generation Sacramentan in his family when he was born to Bill and Judy Ferreirae on April 1, 1961 at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, California. Bill was raised in Rancho Cordova, California, where he would live for his entire life. He was the oldest of three boys. His two younger brothers, Ron and Chris, always looked up to Bill, and he was a perfect role model for them throughout his life.
As a child Bill attended Cordova Lane Elementary School and Mitchell Junior High School. Bill was always a good student who enjoyed new activities and pursued a variety of interests. He was in Little League, Pop Warner football, youth basketball, Y-Indian Guides, and was a drummer in the school band. He delivered the Grapevine newspaper, and nearly every Sunday served as a parish altar boy at St. John Vianney church. In his spare time he collected stamps and baseball cards, and he inherited his father's love of sports. At the end of his final 9th grade football game for Mitchell, Bill walked across the field to shake hands with the other team - at that time he met Conrade Mayer, who would become his best friend for the rest of his life.
At Cordova High School, Bill continued to take advantage of many opportunities. He played football, basketball, and baseball at Cordova, and he became an accomplished auto mechanic. After graduating from Cordova in 1979, Bill attended American River College and Sacramento City College before transferring to Sacramento State, where he graduated in 1984 with a degree in Business Administration. He later went on to earn his teaching credential from National University. During all of this time Bill was supporting himself by working as a mechanic at Sears at Florin Center. It was also during this time that Bill began playing fast pitch softball with his friend Bud Soto.
After college Bill and Conrade began organizing both formal and informal class reunions for the Cordova High Class of 1979. At one of these informal gatherings, Bill and Annette Miller found each other, and they were eventually married in 1990. In the years that followed Bill and Annette were blessed with three children - two daughters, Ashley (23), and Casey (21), and one son, Trevor (22). These four individuals became the centerpieces for the rest of Bill's life. Bill coached all of his kids at various times and never missed any of their sports or activities.
Throughout his adult life, all of Bill's time was devoted to others - his family, his students at David Reese Elementary School, the girls he coached in softball in youth leagues as well as at Cordova High and Sacramento City College, and his friends. And just as he had been a positive influence on his younger brothers while growing up, Bill was an extremely successful leader in all of his endeavors. His softball teams won numerous titles, including a national championship when he was an assistant at Sac City. He was recognized for his teaching on many occasions, but the most important to him was when he would be asked to accompany former students to an awards dinner because he had been their most inspirational teacher. Bill always had time for everyone, whether it was to deal with a serious situation or just share a good time together.
Bill enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. He was an avid cyclist, loved to travel, and was the go-to guy for all issues related to integrating technology at David Reese elementary. His school band experiences as a drummer led to a lifelong love of music, and his children enjoyed giving him a hard time when he would be the one trying to get as close to the stage as possible when they would go to U2 concerts together. He also kept close tabs on all of his favorite sports teams - the Kings, 49ers, A's, and Tottenham Hotspur. Bill also was very involved with the Knights of Columbus and many other activities at St. John Vianney church, where he was a parishioner since the church opened in the 1960's.
Bill was a generous man who prized that same quality in others. So it’s little wonder that he was so active and giving in his community. Bill was a member of several community groups, including serving on committees for the City of Rancho Cordova, Cordova Girls Softball, Cordova High Class of 1979 Reunion Committee, and Rancho Cordova Athletics Hall of Fame Committee.
Bill passed away on July 14, 2014 at Kaiser Permanente South in Sacramento, California. He passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack. He is survived by his wife Annette, children Ashley, Trevor, and Casey, mother Judy, and brothers Ron and Chris. A rosary will be held at St. John Vianney Church at 7 PM on Thursday, July 24. A funeral mass will take place on Friday, July 25 at 1 PM at St. John Vianney, with a reception to follow in the parish hall.
