With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved sister, aunt, and friend, Gwendolyn “Gwen” Goring, who departed this life at the age of 78. Gwen, a longtime resident of St. Hubert, Quebec, was born in Bermuda to Janey Maximen and Clarence Goring. Though she made Canada her home, Bermuda always held a special place in her heart.
Gwen was a woman of boundless curiosity, sharp wit, and deep compassion. She had an adventurous spirit, a love for travel, and an unwavering commitment to her family, friends, and community. She moved to Montreal in 1966 to pursue nursing at Saint Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1969. A dedicated and gifted nurse, she remained at St. Mary’s Hospital for her entire 55-year career, providing exceptional patient care and mentoring generations of nursing professionals.
Beyond her remarkable contributions to healthcare, Gwen was passionate about education and service. She played a pivotal role in With Hand and Heart, a book that compiled the cherished memories of St. Mary’s nursing students, with proceeds supporting nursing bursaries through the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation. From 2018 to 2022, she served as president of E.N.C.O.R.E. Educational Club for Seniors Inc., where she championed the use of technology to foster accessibility and engagement for senior learners.
Gwen’s warmth, humor, and wisdom touched countless lives. She leaves behind her brother, Frederick Goring, along with cherished nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and a host of devoted friends, both new and lifelong. Her legacy of kindness, dedication, and mentorship will live on in the many lives she influenced.
To honor Gwen’s memory, donations may be made to the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation in lieu of flowers.
