

Sheila Marie Sims Harmon, of St. Johns, Florida, peacefully passed Monday, May 12, 2025, surrounded by her family and friends. A longtime resident of Jacksonville, North Carolina, she had made St. Johns her home since 2017.
Sheila was born on April 25, in Lenoir, North Carolina. After graduating high school in Hickory, she served five years in the United States Marine Corps. While stationed in Oahu, Hawaii, she found her lifetime companion, “Woody.” They were married on April 17, 1960, in a small ceremony at the chapel at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and spent the next 59 years of marriage together. During her 5-year stint with the Marine Corps, Sheila enjoyed playing basketball for the Camp Lejeune Women’s Basketball Team, which helped foster her love for the UNC Tarheels. From skills learned in the Marine Corp. as a disbursing clerk she later became a disbursing manager in the Civil Service for 25 years, retiring in 1996, from Camp Lejeune.
Sheila cherished the time spent with her family and was known for her love of tasty food, big family meals, holiday gatherings, weekly hair appointments and shopping at the Hallmark store for the perfect card. Sheila rarely missed a reason to celebrate a milestone and always had the perfect card for the special occasion.
Sheila was preceded in death by her father Luther Raleigh Sims, her beloved mother Ethel Newmeir Sims, cherished husband Elwood Lawrence Harmon; her brothers, Robert Bell, and Lance Sims; her sister, Janet Sims Thaw; and her grandson, Gavin Dozier.
She is survived by her brother Terry Sims of Indianapolis; her five children, Michael Harmon (wife Vannette Johnson Harmon) of Fletcher, NC; Michele Harmon Hughes (husband Michael Hughes) of San Diego, CA; Thomas Harmon (wife Victoria Bryant Harmon) of St. Johns, FL; Robert Harmon (wife Terri Harmon) of Montrose, CO; and Christina Harmon Dozier of Wilmington, NC.
She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Meaghan Harmon Rogers (husband Travis Rogers) of Fletcher, NC; Geoffrey Harmon of Fletcher, NC; Lauren Hughes Fox (husband Jimmy Fox) of Goodyear, AZ; Ray Hughes, Sacramento, CA and Anna Hughes, Los Angeles, CA; Alex Dozier of Charleston, SC; and Joseph Harmon and Jennifer Harmon of St. Johns, FL and one great-grandson: Atticus Fox of Goodyear, AZ.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 19, at 11:00 a.m. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home 1285 St. Johns Parkway, Saint Johns, Florida 32259, Pastor Dusty Phillips, to officiate, entombment to follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery 11730 Old St. Augustine Road, Jacksonville, FL 32258.
