Albert Hirsch

Born in Newburyport on November 30, 1916, he was a son of the late Charles and Rose (Wolk) Hirsch. He was a lifelong resident of Newburyport. After graduation from Newburyport High School in 1934, he attended Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston. Mr. Hirsch worked in the Newburyport Post Office prior to serving in the Army Air Corp in England during WWII, where he met his wife Pauline (Hales) Hirsch. Mr. and Mrs. Hirsch were married for 71 years.

After the war Mr. Hirsch returned to the Newburyport Post Office where he became Postmaster in 1980 until his retirement. He then assisted his wife in running Hardwick’s, a woman’s clothing shop in Newburyport. Mr. and Mrs. Hirsch ultimately purchased the shop and continued it’s operation until their retirement in 1987. He was a longtime member of Congregation Ahavas Achim and the Rotary Club, both of Newburyport.

Al was recently honored for his service to the country during a ceremony on Veteran’s Day in Newburyport where he received citations from the State Senate and House of Representatives.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Pauline; son Gerald Hirsch and his wife Denise; grandchildren Amanda (Hirotaka) Maeda and Laura (Benedict) Bryan. He is also survived by his great grandchildren Ellie and Ryden Maeda, Meghan and Conor Bryan as well as niece and nephew Francine and Ronald Hirsch.

A graveside service will be held today, Wednesday at 11 am at the Newburyport Hebrew Cemetery, 10 Toll Rd., Salisbury, MA. Memorial observance will be held at his late residence immediately following the services until 3pm.
