

Alfred Marshall of Boca Raton FL, formerly of Beverly MA and St. Maarten, beloved husband of Estelle (Newburg) Marshall and the late Marirose(Pelletier) Marshall, passed away in Boca Raton December 28,2013 following a short illness. He was 94.
Born February 28, 1919 in Lawrence MA he was the son of the late Louis and Annie (Spector) Marshall. Alfred grew up in Beverly and graduated from Beverly High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy and was en-route to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7th, 1941. On arrival he volunteered to be an underwater diver, repairing the ships that were destroyed in the attack.
Following the war, he returned to live in Beverly. His many jobs included building homes and general contracting as well as welding, which he had learned in the Navy. On Enon Street in North Beverly, he started many businesses including a fruit stand, grocery store and an ice cream stand where he sold banana splits on Sundays for 29 cents to use the ripe bananas. He also ran an auction in the basement
In 1956 Marshall conceived the idea of a self-service department store
offering brand names for less. It was on that spot that he opened the
original Marshall's Department Store, which he helped build.
Years later, after selling Marshall's in the US, he moved to the Caribbean where he opened Marshall's in St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. Maarten. American tourists leaving their cruise ships in St. Thomas were always pleasantly surprised to be greeted by the familiar Marshall's sign. Alfred loved to sail and to travel. He set up buying offices in South Korea and Hong Kong, importing all manner of merchandise to sell and distribute throughout the Caribbean.
In St. Maarten, he started Marshall Motors and his grandson Aaron is still affiliated with the company.
In addition to his wife, Marshall is survived by his children; Ronald and his wife Carolann of Hampton, NH, Jan and his wife Patricia of St. Maarten and Deborah Miller and her husband Dudley of Ipswich and Naples, FL.; his grandchildren Aaron of St. Maarten, Nicole (Marshall) Gouin and her husband Christopher of Exeter, NH, Zachary Miller of Ipswich, Courtney (Miller)Calvert and her husband of CA, Dana (Marshall)Fisher and her husband, and two great grandchildren. He was also predeceased by a sister, "Buddy" Kaplan.
Services will be at Temple B’nai Abraham, 200 East Lothrop St, Beverly on Thursday, January 2nd at 10 AM followed by interment at the Sons of Abraham cemetery in Beverly.
