It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Edward Roy Seligman, who succumbed after a courageous 9- month battle with glioblastoma brain cancer on September 4, 2024, at the age of 69. Edward was a beloved husband, father, Zayde, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and retired firefighter. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A lifelong resident of Swampscott, Ed was appointed to the Swampscott Fire Department on December 3, 2001 where he was then promoted to Lieutenant on July 17, 2013 and retired on October 15, 2019 after nearly 18 years of service. In this role, he displayed unwavering courage, compassion, and a selfless commitment to his local community.
His impact and expertise extended to his role as a founding member of the FEMA Massachusetts Task Force 1 in July 1992. He was the FEMA Logistics Manager for the Beverly Massachusetts Task Force for 30 years and part of the Incident Support Team (Blue Team). He was deployed for numerous disasters and events including 9/11 and most recently the Surfside, FL building collapse in 2021. Ed provided aid to communities throughout the country in times of devastation with the same dedication and drive as he did with everything in his life.
Ed leaves behind his devoted wife, Donna (DeFranco) Seligman, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage; his daughters Jessica and husband Christopher Guyer, Ariana and husband Anthony Esdra and their children Ciro and Kinsley who lovingly called him Zayde; his brother Howie Seligman; nephews Adam and Tammy Seligman, Todd and Kerry Seligman; cousin Beverly Bloch; mother-in-law Mary “Mickey” DeFranco and many beloved cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, special friends and caregivers who were touched by his kindness and helping hand. He was predeceased by his father Aaron “Red” Seligman, mother Edith “Yuddie” Spector (Seligman), and step-father Benjamin Spector.
Ed’s life was a testament to the values he held dear: family, service, and integrity. He faced his battle with glioblastoma brain cancer with remarkable strength and bravery, much like he did throughout his life. Ed’s spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. His memory will be cherished and his example will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A memorial service celebrating Edward's life and legacy will be held on Sunday, September 8th at 1:30pm at Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead, MA. Flowers are not allowed. The family requests donations be made to Care Dimensions and Swampscott Firefighters Relief Association (checks payable to “Swampscott Firefighters Relief Association” at 76 Burrill St. Swampscott MA 01907) in Ed’s honor.
