
Mel was born in Boonton, NJ and grew up in the Newark area. He was a son of Michael and Fannie (Rosinsky) Mirrer. Mel graduated Rutgers School of Pharmacy in 1955. In 1956, Mel entered the Army as a Sergeant and served two years in Detroit, Michigan. He opened Mirrer Pharmacy in New Providence, NJ in 1967. Mel was known for always treating his customers like family. There were countless times when he met a customer at the pharmacy at 2am if they needed medication after leaving the hospital or had an emergency.
Mel was an avid flyer and in addition to having his private pilot’s license, he was a Certified Flight Instructor and a member of the Aero Club of New Jersey. He enjoyed inviting friends and family to fly with him. One of his favorite trips was flying over New York City.
Stopping at garage sales was one of Mel’s passions. He also loved to play bridge and other card games. Mel was one of the early adopters of computers and printers, and learned to repair them on his own.
He is survived by his son Barry (Angela) Mirrer of Newton, MA, his daughter Karen (Raulf) Neelis of Pompton Lakes, NJ, and his daughter Susan (Michael) Mulhern of Andover, MA. He was a loving grandfather to Samantha and Victoria Mirrer and Max and Molly Mulhern. He was predeceased by his brother Robert H. Mirrer who gave his life as a Major in the US Air Force during the Vietnam war.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 18 at 10:30am in Mount Lebanon Cemetery/Forest Lawn at 189 Gill Lane, Iselin, NJ.
