Mildred Huberman, of Danvers, passed away peacefully at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, MA on Monday April 22, 2013 at the age of 97. A Marblehead resident for 57 years, Mildred moved to Brightview Assisted Living in Danvers in 2010.
Mildred was born on March 28, 1916 to Joseph and Itta Blinkoff in Brooklyn, New York. Being the youngest of six sisters, Mildred was immersed in a household of yiddish, Jewish cooking, and music. Despite the harsh economic times, her Russian immigrant parents always found a way to provide for their large family. Mildred learned to play the piano from her older sister who was the only family member to take lessons. Mildred's natural musical ability enabled her to excel at the piano and she often played by ear. Mildred continued to play the piano up until her death.
Mildred met her husband, Sam, before World War II on the Coney Island boardwalk in New York. After five years of long distance correspondence, Sam returned from the European theater to the love of his life with a ring and a proposal. Sam and Mildred originally settled in New York, where their first child Allen was born. After a couple of years, the family moved to Lynn, Massachusetts following Sam's career in the shoe industry. Sam and Mildred's daughter Phyllis was born shortly thereafter and the family moved to Marblehead. Later in life, Mildred was very active in senior programs at the Jewish Community Center of the North Shore, attending the Golden Age Club, the Friendship Club, and especially enjoyed attending Yiddish Club. Mildred was very close to her three grandchildren for whom she babysat quite frequently. Elyssa, Jared and Bret had many sleepovers at Nana's where they enjoyed her fabulous cooking.
Mildred was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Huberman, and her son Allen Huberman. She is survived by her daughter Phyllis Crafton and her husband Dennis of Swampscott, her granddaughter Elyssa Kaplan and her husband Scott of Peabody, her grandson Jared Crafton and his wife Michelle of Stamford, CT, as well as her grandson Bret Crafton of Boston. Mildred is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Max and Samantha Kaplan and Zachary Crafton.
Graveside services were held at Congregation Shirat Hayam Cemetery, Temple Israel section on Thursday, April 25. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Mildred’s memory to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan Street, Danvers, MA 01923. Arrangements by Stanetsky-Hymanson Chapel, Salem.
