

She was born in San Antonio, TX, on August 19, 1928 to parents Mary and John P. Arnot. Betty Lou graduated from Grants Pass High School and then enrolled at the University of Oregon where she obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree. She later went on to Oregon College of Education for her Masters of Education.
On December 16, 1951, Betty Lou married her college sweetheart and love of her life, Harold (Hap) Saabye, after he had returned from completing 100 missions for the Air Force during the Korean War. Teaching at the Oregon State School for the Deaf was a career Betty Lou enjoyed until her retirement after 26 years.
She belonged to ADK and PEO (both philanthropic organizations that support women in education), Eastern Star, St. Anne’s Guild of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and Salem Hospital Auxiliary. She was president of many organizations to which she belonged. Betty Lou enjoyed dancing with her husband, flying in the experimental aircraft “The Breezy” built by Hap, traveling the world, and every state in the US. The absolute love of her family and faith served as an example for those who knew her. Her sense of humor was always present and she made everyone feel like a friend.
Betty Lou was preceded in death by her husband Hap. She is survived by her daughter Dana Wolf (Steve Young), grandchildren Lyndsay Itoh (Toshimi) and J.P. Wolf (Ellie), step-grandchildren Geoff and David Young, and 5 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Delia Miller and Alice Ziliotto, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Friday, October 21, 2022,at 2:00 PM at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (1444 Liberty St. SE, Salem, OR) and internment at Willamette National Cemetery at a later date.
