Clayton was born in Salem, Oregon, where he spent most of his life. Early in life he was raised on a large hop farm in Independence, Oregon. By the age of 8, he was driving a team of horses, while logging on the family farm. Later, he and his mother moved to Portland, where he attended Benson High School. He met the love of his life, Maxine LaDue upon returning to Salem. They were married for 36 years, when she died in 1974. He was married to Vi Noyes, a great golfing companion, from 1975 until she passed away in 1995.
Clayton worked for Capitol Chevrolet and Cadillac in Salem from 1939 until 1965. That time was interrupted by service in the US Army in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1946. In addition to being wounded twice, he received many medals and commendations for his service. He worked as an insurance claim adjustor for Allstate Insurance from 1965 until retirement. Besides fishing, hunting, and camping, golf was the most challenging and beloved activity he enjoyed. He was a member of Santiam Golf Club for many years, until he was physically unable to continue to play in his later years.
He is survived by his son Jerry (Clarice), son Ed (Terry), daughter Vicki Clark, son Chuck, and daughter Cathy Roeter, along with 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Marian Estates in Sublimity, who so lovingly cared for dad. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the American Cancer Society.
A graveside service will be held Monday, October 17, 10 am at City View Cemetery. Arrangements by Howell-Edwards-Doerksen Funeral Home. For condolences, photos and tribute video, please visit www.HED-FH.com.
