She came of age during the German occupation of Denmark in World War II, an experience that shaped her resilience and outlook on life.
Else graduated from the School of Social Work in Copenhagen in 1953 and worked at the county hospital there until 1961. That year, she came to the United States on an 18-month educational exchange program, sponsored by the American Scandinavian Foundation, to further her studies in social work. It was during this time, on a Chemeketan hike to Black Butte, she met her future husband, Ronald Nichols.
Due to visa regulations, Else was unable to return to the U.S. for 2 years after the program ended. In 1964, Ronald flew to Denmark, where they were married before returning together to Oregon to build their life.
Else worked for the State of Oregon conducting independent adoption studies before devoting herself to raising their two daughters. When the girls reached high school, she resumed her professional career as a social worker in the neurology department at Salem Hospital, where she worked until her retirement in 1994.
She became an American citizen in 1988, but her heart and identity always remained deeply rooted in her Danish heritage.
Else was a long-time member of the Lutheran Church and later joined Westminister Presbyterian Church. She was also actively involved in the Institute for Continued Learning (ICL) at Willamette University.
She and Ron shared a love of travel and adventure, journeying together across the globe to every continent except Antarctica.
Else and Ron were married for 60 years and raised two daughters, Lisbet Bluhm (Jeff) and Myana Albin (Richard). She is also survived by five beloved grandchildren.
Else lived life to the fullest. She was known for her strong, independent spirit, her sense of adventure, her compassion, her unmistakable laugh, and her elegant European flair. She set a lasting example of how to live with purpose, joy in your heart, and curiosity.
A memorial service will be held on October 18, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Capital Manor.
